Hello there,

I recently was fortunate enough to receive an interview at Yale. Looking through flight prices, it seems like it will cost me 500-600$ for a flight, since the interview is in the middle of the week.

Cornell states that they are receptive to in the area requests, and I'm thinking about sending them an email since Yale is about 1 hour and twenty minutes away. Flying to NYC first basically cuts my costs in half ($300ish) and saves me a trip to the east coast (I've from the west coast).

I understand that it's a long shot, but I'm really tight on money and trying to minimize costs in anyway possible. In case Cornell isn't open to my in the area requests, do you all know of any other NYC medical schools that generally are?

BTW I presume you are flying into NYC and not Hartford? You may find flying into Newark (EWR) then getting into Manhattan to the commuter train to Hartford worth the cost. all depends on timing

Yes, I was planning on flying into NYC first because that seems to save a few hundred dollars. I'll take a look at your suggestion, thank you!

How would you phrase an 'in the area' email? I know Weill Cornell is receptive to them, but I don't want to seem presumptuous emailing a school that I don't currently have an interview with... it would be very nice to limit the number of trips though

To whom it may concern.

I have been extremely fortunate in being granted an interview at a school in the new york city area. with the cost of airfare and travel as well as the time away from my current course of study, I would like to respectfully ask if your institution may be inclined to gramt me an interview, that it could schedule a day or two before or after DATE. I thank you for this opportunity

thank you, this sounds so much better than everything I had written!

Do schools require verification of an interview in the area to do this? Technically couldn't you do this even if you don't have an interview in the area to get an interview?

I guess that could happen! I'm not sure if they require verification but I plan on emailing them today so I'll let you know if they need verification

@LA_Doc have you heard or seen anything about whether Mt. Sinai and NYU are receptive to in-the-area emails?

@bootsandspooky Update: NYU is not. They said that if you get an interview at a later point in time, they'll try to work with your schedule then.

I'm in a similar situation. I can't figure out how to word the email without it sounding like I'm assuming they were going to invite me in the first place. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I like the email suggested above, but still seems like you're assuming they were going to invite you to begin with.

I understand your struggle... it's an awkward email to send.

Funny story, I sent NYU an email before really checking if they were receptive... which they said they weren't (as stated above)... but then they sent me an II a couple days later. lol (so at least it didn't hurt me to have sent it). Mount Sinai almost seemed like they weren't actually receptive based on the wording of their email response ("it will be noted if interview is granted") and I haven't heard back from them at all II-wise.

Anyway, here's generally what I said (obvi change the bolded prn):
Dear Admissions Office,
I would respectfully like to inform you that I will be in city on dates. If extended an interview invitation, I would be thrilled to visit school within these dates to help save some time and money. Something about understanding the length and complexity of the review process and being grateful for their time.
Thank you etc.,
moi
