I would like to goto a DO school and I have started my pre-reqs this past fall. I took Biology I and will take Bio. II this spring at my local community college. I plan on taking all of the pre-reqs at my CC because I work full-time and am married. My UGPA w/ only 1 science class that did not have a lab was 3.35. Will I have a problem with my CC classes when I apply to DO school? The local college by me is private and offers few if any night options. Thank you.

Congrats on wanting to go to med school! Policies on CC classess differ for all med schools. I personally haven't had any problems and I applied to all DO schools. I had 2 prereq CC classes and 2 non-required CC classes. They are definately a great way to boost your science GPA.

What you shold do is decide which DO schools you want to go to and contact them and see their CC policies.
Good luck!

Hey

You should have no problem. I have not heard of a DO school who dosent take CC pre reqs. Just be careful about pre reqs. There are some DO schools that req. certain classes that others do not. You might check on the schools your interested in!

Thank you for the help. Do I need another bachelor's degree to apply or will my CC classes be ok? I am sorry for the questions but I am very new to this process. Thanks again!

Yes, you either need a bachelor's degree when you apply or have it completed by the time you matriculate into the med school.

I already have a BA and I was wondering if I needed to get a BS to apply. I have to take my pre-reqs at my CC as a post-bacc and I was concerned about how this would be viewed by the admissions department. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again!

Welcome to the non-trad road. Your BA will be fine. Many schools require either a bachelor's degree or 120 hours and many people get in without science majors/degrees. There are also many people who satisfy their prereqs at a CC, but there are polar opinions on this (as with most other aspects of life). CC classes are oftentimes less difficult than at more "robust" four year institutions which is why it may be easier to boost your GPA. Adcoms are also aware of this and may lean toward applicants that are more of a known quantity when it comes to academic abilities. This is not true for all obviously, but it merits consideration. I also worked full time+ while earning my post-baccalaureate credits, but opted to commute 60+ miles to a university with a more flexible schedule instead of going the CC route. Either way you go, do your best, ace your classes and enjoy your new endeavor!
