newbie here some question on my stats to get into UNC

hi guys, my brother introduced me to this site and i think its great place for info.

i'm currently a senior at UNC (BS degree in chemistry), w/ aadsas science gpa of 3.15 and elective of 3.25
i just took DAT and the scores were: 20AA, 20TS (19bio, 21gen., 21, org.), PAT 21, RC 21, QR 17.

what are my chances of getting into UNC?

Your chances are pretty dang good. Last year, when I interviewed there we went over the numbers with the dean. Essentially, every in-state applicant was interviewed and accepted. I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it.

the thing is, i know a guy who had about 21 in DAT and gpa of 3.5 in computer science and chemistry.
although his stats were good (or at least better than mine), he didn't get into unc, but he did get into UPenn 😕
actually all of my friends who applied to unc did get in except this guy.

Actually, I think there were 200 in state applicants for ~60 seats last time I checked. Still, pretty good odds for us NC residents. There are ~600 applicants for the 20 or so out of state spots.

not to be overly negative, but i got denied last yr w/ a 3.5 overall 3.2BCP (psych major, chem minor from UNC) and 20/20/17 DAT, w/ some pretty good dental experience. I applied late got the last interview date, and my interview went ok (i felt like 2 of 3 interviews went well) when I asked the dean how to improve he told me they mainly or only look at the sci gpa vs overall and mine was below avg in that deptmt. I also got the feeling though for those 60 in state spots that there were a ton of male applicants competing for essentially 30 spots. Ive heard but im not sure if this is rumor that 2009s class was a sci avg of 3.6 maybe and 20.5 DAT which is a huge jump from previous years. I tell you this b/c I dont want you to be in the same place im in. I got sorta cocky about my chances and therefore sorta skipped interviews at two other schools (I went to a total of 3 interviews) Well now im still waitlisted at one school and trying to figure out how to spend a year productively as I reapply to a bunch of schools. I hear you though that gpa may be below average as far as schools are concerned but if they only knew how ridiculous some of the chem classes at carolina are theyd recognize your gpa is solid as hell(i.e. austell chem 61), from what ive heard though they dont really prefer a UNC 3.2 to say a State 3.3 which in my eyes is insane. Good luck, just dont put all your eggs in one basket like me, plus youd probably like a lot of the other schools once you visit, so keep an open mind.

thanks for the advise. I know that avg GPA for unc chem dept is like 2.8 or so. i don't know about other majors in unc, but i know for a fact that my upper classes in biochem (i'm in biochem track which i think is harder than regular chem) has at least 30% graduates whom i have to compete against.
i remember todd saying "YOU ARE MINE!" haha

looking at my brother's experience getting into med school here, i realized that it's not the end of the world if i don't get in this year. i only applied to UNC b/c even if i did get into the schools that i was going to apply, i would have at least wait a year to reapply to unc. i know i'm taking a big risk, but its a risk i'm willing to take. i know unc has great programs in my opinion than the schools that i like to attend, from talking to many dental students here and up in north (upenn, tufts, boston, columbia, nyu).
i'm not saying i want to rest a year, but saying that i will have great opportunities for community services, shadowing, and most importantly, improve myself on fields that are not related to just academics. if i wasn't in school right now, i would've gone to louisiana in a heart bit to help people in need.

i'm also trying to take advantage of networks, and i know interviews are very important aspect in unc. the interview factors to about 40% of admission, from very reliable source.

i still have 2 more semester to pull up my gpa, although the admission commitee won't see it this year. i really need to buckle down and really do well though.

The numbers get kinda messy, but I left my interview last year with the distinct impression that if you were an in-state applicant, your chances were VERY good. The numbers that the dean showed indicated that the overwhelming majority of applicants were out-of-staters, and that nearly 100 were interviewed for 15 spots. On the other hand, two years ago, only ~150 in-state students applied. Nearly all 150 were interviewed and accepted. Not all chose to attend UNC. It's been a year, and my memory is probably a little cloudy, but I think in-state applicants don't have too much to worry about if your stats are half-way decent.

I think you are right as I have a cousin that got in there and scored an 18 overall. He was in state.

Most public schools will show a similar preference. If memory serves, when I applied to IUSD the overall acceptance rate for resident applicants was 65-70%, compared to 10-15% for nonresidents.

I got shot down as a resident from NC last year. I interviewed on the first date and they went very well. I had a 3.5 science and a 3.45 overall GPA. My downfall was my DAT. I had an 18 overall and 19 science. I'm still bitter but thats what I get for not being a good test taker.

i've also heard that if you have relatively high GPA w/ avg to low DAT is rather unfavorable than if you had 3.1 gpa and high dat score. the reasons might be controversal so i won't discuss them here, but i don't know how much the above statement is the truth.

You are waaaaay off course with those numbers. I have classmates who applied for 3 years to get in even though they had 20 DAT and around 3.7s. If you are a white male you better have the stats or else it's not happening....and even then it might not.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I've got no qualms with that. I'm not trying to spread inaccurate info. When I left that interview, I got together with 4 other friends who all interviewed there, and we all came away with the same impression. We all saw the same numbers. We all wished we were in-state applicants. None of us were accepted. None of us had DAT scores below 22. I was notified in March about being on the wait-list, and I was told I had until April 1 to notify UNC about whether I'd like to attend. I figured my chances were still a long shot. And, by that time, I had already committed money to Pacific. UNC is a great school (almost as good as Pacific), and had they accepted me on Dec. 1, it would have been a very difficult desicion.

Anyway, regardless, I'd like to see more 'realistic' numbers if I'm waaaaaay off. UNC is a tough school to get into.

why do you have to have the "stats" if you're white?
do dental schools follow the some ethnic distribution?
