newbie podiatry application question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes you can.

Yes you can still apply, but seeing as how you recently switched over from dent...make sure this is what you want to do...shadow a pod, do some research...pod and dent are entirely different professions...

Good Luck

👍

Thanks for the response guys. i've been shadowing a podiatrist i found in the mentors site for a couple of weeks now. Podiatry just seems a bit more complex than dentistry (not to say dentistry is an easy field in any way) and a bit more challenging in nature.

a bit of 411 on me: I am a senior and graudating this spring with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in health. I have a 3.85 cum GPA and 3.73 science GPA. I did take the DATs knowing the some of the podiatry schools did accept DAT scores. I have an 18AA and 17TS. Should I hold off applying this year and shoot for 2009 or apply for the 2008 cycle?

I would take the MCAT if you feel somewhat preped for it...I went to all 8 schools...and liked DMU the best...and (pls correct me if i'm wrong) but they don't take the DAT...
I think your GPA is great and you won't have any issues getting in. Just get a 22+ on the MCAT...
and yes, good luck! 👍

i have a similar question as you and if someone could help out i would greatly appreciate it! i'm applying for the FALL 2008 cycle (I want to go to Barry). my stats are good and i've shadowed a few pods and everything is set except the mcat. i was wondering if there would be a big difference b/w taking the april vs may mcat. seeing how i'm applying in the fall 08 is the may 27th mcat date pushing it? would this also make the option of retaking it out of the picture (just incase)?

why barry?

I do NOT intend to offend anyone here...or barry current/future students by saying this...but honestly, I don't think it takes much to get into barry...from my personal application and interview experience...

the main reason is the location. the winters bum me out and i just need to get out of ohio here. barry also has a fair cost of living and small school friendly environment yet in a big city so theres lots to do. i guess my question to you is, why not barry? it doesnt really take much to get into any of the pod schools so barry is no exception (granted, some maybe slightly more selective)

can anyone answer the question about taking the mcat in april vs may for fall 08? thanks! =)

I'm pretty sure either April or May would be fine but I would call Marc Weiner (dean @ Barry) just to make sure!

I'm taking it in April for Barry...but thats just because I want to get it out the way..

Pod school is easy to get in (all of them), but getting out is a different story 😀

Also, for the OP, some schools still accept DAT scores, but I think they are trying to change that.

OCPM is an example.

i am from the south and want to stay in a warmer climate, probably arizona or florida, and both accept DATs. In any case I contacted all the schools directly and awaiting what they say before I apply. Thanks for the help guys, you guys are all great. Aren't the basic sciences the same as pre-med, pre-opt, pre-dent, etc.? So any with any post grad school, I would imagine podiatry school is on the same level. Right?

pretty much yeah...
I think the cirriculum at Barry will differ at least slightly from that of AZPOD though....I think AZPOD's will be tougher! They have exams every Monday I believe, although I'm sure you have exams quite oft in the independent Pod Schools too. You are also coupled with D.O. Medical Students....quite the challenge but you learn a lot!

👍

you will have to do a pointless supplement for arizona.

arizona has a small class size, they might be filled up by this point.

Winters here in Florida are righteous for the first year, but after that, you'll feel really cold. Example...today it was 68 here and I was freezing. I tried to go to the park to read "His Dark Materials," and it was too chilly.

I guess that no snow is always good though. 😀

HAHA wait for Philly. Today is a warm day for this time of year...a cool 47 degrees. You're gonna love it!

I would definitely think of other factors more than weather when deciding on podiatry school. It's only four years, but you are investing a ton of money. Go where you think you'll get the best education...period. Four years is a drop in the bucket compared to the many years left of your life.

I live in Phoenix, not far from AzPod, and had high hopes of remaining here. However, after interviewing there, it was clear that school wouldn't offer me the best education, and we weren't a good fit. I'm going to be saying goodbye to the sunny, warm winter days in Phoenix and going into chilly, long, dreary winters in Chicago, but there is not a doubt in my mind I picked the best school for me. Just something to consider...

good points but i've heard over and over that the education is what you make of it and i'm a pretty independent studier, so i'm not too worried. after attending 3 different colleges (undergrad plus post bac work) i realized just how much atsmosphere plays a huge part for me (weather, school size, location, etc). weather is just one of the ones i'm looking at now because for instance, last week it was around 9 degrees with wind chill, 5 days later my car got a flat in the freezing rain, and waking up to dark chilly mornings with snow on the ground de-brightens my mood (no pun intended).

TUSP0diatricM, 68 degrees, i envy you!

i was reading on another post about the NYU podiatry school that one of the professors or whoever charges $500 a day for shadowing??? Is that allowed?? And if so, who would pay so much just to shadow them? Has anyone else ever had to deal with this? I though shadowing should be something a professional does to give back in some way to advance his or her own profession.

also, once you become a DPM, is hard to find a job placement afterwards? just wanted to ask you guys on your thoughts.

There are multitudes of DPMs who will let you shadow in their offices for free. Don't even bother with someone who indicates they will charge--that's ridiculous. If you have trouble finding a resource, contact the APMA at [email protected] and we'll set you up.

There are also lots of threads running about job opportunities. Do the numbers; there are less graduates lately and more openings as many of the DPMs retire. Did you know that 50% of APMA members are over 50 y.o.? If that isn't a good statistic to know for the future, I don't know what is....

spo01- I'd just be careful because from what I've been hearing, not all pod schools were created equal...
