News on Ephedra(ephedrine alkaloids): Of course, as of 4-12-2004, ephedra was ruled illegal to manufacture or sell in the USA. Note: Pure synthetic ephedrine is not available through us, as it is a controlled substance in many states.

BUT; A federal court has now ruled the FDA ban on ephedra was not legal (4-14-2005) and sent the proceedings back to the FDA. This has enabled ephedra supplements to be sold once again. This can change in any month however.

Anyhow, I dont really care if ephedra is on the market. These so called "safe" non-ephedra diet pills still contain herbal stimulants that can be just as unhealthy. The fact is ephedra is useful in a stack to stimulate weight loss, but if you want to be an idiot and take 50 dozen pills thinking youll turn into Kate Moss overnight..then whatever.....

From what I understand, ephedra is a supplement and the FDA is does not have any regulation on any supplements, which is why ephedra was able to be put back on the market.

If you see any of that stuff on the regular sales floor in WA, be aware that it is a violation of the state's ephedrine-derivative logbook system. We had a board of pharmacy inspection last week and they checked up on it. Primatene and one other asthma product had to be pulled from floor stock. My guess is there will be some memo of clarification coming out soon, because hardly anyone realizes these products fall under the WA pseudoephedrine law.

All ephedrine related products are now kept behind pharmacy counters in WA. To buy them you have to show ID and the pharmacy must log your purchase. This is mandated by a law which took effect January 1, 2006.

Idaho has the same sort of system. In OR, pseudoephedrine is a prescription item. I'm not sure if the the ephedra related asthma medications are covered by their state laws.

Its actually a federal law which falls under the Patriot Act of ????year. Its called the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005. It was signed into law March 30, 2006 & becomes effective in all states Sept 30, 2006.

Some states chose to initiate it earlier - in CA it was started April 9,2006 - UGGGGH!

You can look the law up online.

And...yes...the FDA (FOOD & Drug Administration) does indeed have regulatory authority over food supplements. These & herbals fall under different categories, but they still have restrictions on claims & labeling.

No...federal law only addresses over the counter cough, cold & allergy products. However, any state can write a more restrictive law & the more restrictive law prevails. The federal law is the base for everyone - thus the whole logbook thing......

There is a REASON why the FDA does not regulate all these supplements, and its because they did not want or cant get FDA approval which is what you WANT. Because meaning that something is FDA approved you have provided sufficient scientific evidence thru precise and long research that the pill in the bottle you're taking is going to do what it says its going to do, and on the flipside you are REQUIRED by the FDA if the drug is approved to list all known even if slim >1% side effects that the drug may impose. So there is a reason why Big Pharm companies spend billions in research to get a drug FDA approved. FDA approval is what you want, if its not FDA approved, then I can claim to sell you a bottle of sugar pills and say they will make your memory 100,000 better, or you will lose weight in 24 hours.

The whole thing is ridiculous anyway. I lift weights and use an ECA (ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin) stack to cut. It works great. You can get ephedrine HCL on the Internet tres quick and its cheaper anyways. Just search for Vasopro or Biotek.

It's the same deal for steroids (not that I would touch them. Even I have my limits). The safe ones(relatively) are illegal, but you can buy "prohormones" that are really dangerous and they are legal.

It's because ephedrine products are bought in large quantities to extract the ephedrine for meth production. People used to be able to go to the store and buy cases of Mini-thins and such without question. By being logged, people buying large amounts can be monitored for involvement in meth labs... a HUGE problem in WA.

...Yea, sure you want Mini-thins for your asthma...

One of my patients who works for the state commented that the new system has led to a huge decrease in the number of meth labs operating in WA. I haven't heard of the BOP or anyone checking up on the paper logs to see if people are making multiple purchases across town yet. It seems they could easily get away with it at this point in time.

Yes, they claim that the KY law has made a HUGE dent in the number of meth labs in the state. I dunno...

Since most pharmacies use a paper log, it would be pretty easy to go to 10 different pharmacies in a day to circumvent the 3.6 gram federal max/day.

The 3.6 gram/day thing sucks because it means that if one takes Claritin D-12 hour daily (my mother for example) you can only buy a 15 day supply at a time. Lucky for me I get my Zyrtec-D by Rx. Allergies suck in this region of the country.

I will say that having the stuff behind the counter has eliminated the problem of it being shoplifted, which was very common pre-meth-law.
