Hi everyone, I'm going to be graduating with a BS in Physics from state university this spring, and I'm interested in going to medical school. I have a low overall GPA, ~2.7, and an even lower core GPA, ~2.5. I haven't taken the MCAT yet, but I have begun doing some light studying. I have two years of research experience on a computational biophysics project, I've done a summer internship at a hospital working in cardiac imaging research, and I've spent a summer shadowing physicians and working as a scribe. I plan on continuing the shadowing and working as a scribe this upcoming summer as well.

I still need to take chemistry and biology pre-recs before applying to medical school. Based on the research I've done, my current plan is to spend next year taking the first year biology and organic chemistry series courses at a junior college, then apply for a post-bacc program the following year.

Does all of this offset my low GPA, or are my chances pretty slim? Also, do junior college classes look inferior on a transcript to those taken at a four year institution? If they do, what other options would I have to take classes and hopefully increase my GPA?

Any help/insight is appreciated, thanks!

If you can't get your gpa above 3.0, your application may not get much personal attention (unless you are in a very lucky state or really fit the mission for a mission-based school).
Try one of the grade calculators in the sticky that precedes this sub-forum to see what the odds of raising your gpa might be.
