Hi!

I was wondering if any current NHSC dentists could shed light of the salary? What is the salary when you start and if there is any progression as you go on? Also if any of you are NHSC dentists but with speciality like pedo what is the salary?

I appreciate it!

Salary has nothing to do with the NHSC. You are working in public health so you can probably find some info just by googling that. However, it is completely dependent on the area and organization you work for. Best way to find out is contact clinics you are interested in and ask them about starting salary. Even giving a range wouldn’t mean much because it varies so widely. Since you are working in public health, it’s less than private practice, but still not bad considering a large portion of your loans (if not all with the scholarship) will be taken care of by the NHSC.

Depends on location. Not sure about pedo, but general dentists at FQHC’s in Northern California range from $130,000-$140,000. Raises are minimal if at all. Some clinics have sign on bonuses and/or pay for your relocation. On top of that, you get your loan repayment disbursement’s and full benefits from whichever organization you end up working for, plus paid time off and sick leave. Also license renewal fees are covered and Continuing education credit $2500 a year towards whatever CE’s you want to take and paid time off to take them.

120-150k usually. When you add up all the benefits including holidays, paid time off, CME, health insurance, etc and loan repayment you're way over 200k for sure. That is so much better than an associate position for a new grad. The progression is to be dental director at a community health center. I see pay maxing out at 175k-200k.
