A friend of mine told me that NJ has a new smp program? Is this true? I ve never heard of any smp in NJ? Does anyone know anything about this program?

There are three UMDNJ campuses: two are allopathic (UMDNJ-NJMS and UMDNJ-RWJ) and one is osteopathic (UMDNJ-SOM).

NJMS in Newark has an MBS (non-thesis) / MS (thesis) in Biomedical Sciences program that allows you to take at least one medical course with the MD students. This program has been around for awhile. In the past you could take several medical courses. I don't think that's guaranteed anymore because the program has become larger over the years. The program recommends the thesis track (designed as 1.5 semesters) for those seeking admission to med school / dental school. I believe those interested in dental school can also take some dental courses.

UMDNJ-SOM in Stratford has a program that is mirrored after the one in Newark. It's a new program (only in its second year) and it also has the same tracks (thesis and non-thesis). You are limited to two medical courses, but you can pick any combo out of the following

Fall: Medical Physiology / Histology / Medical Genetics
Spring: Gross and Developmental Anatomy / Neuroscience / Medical Microbiology

The non-thesis track can be completed in one year, but for the thesis track, 1.5 years is recommended (just like the one in NJMS).

Are these programs like other smp programs where a certain percentage of the class will be getting into the med school the next year (like Georgetown, BU, RF)?

well its not guaranteed that u will get in...but a very large number of the GSBS program students in Newark get into NJMS

So if you wanted to gain admission into the med school the next year, you would basically have to do the 1.5 year thesis track? Would it be possible, has it been done, to finish the .5 year while your in med school?

With the UMDNJ program at Newark (allopathic), I believe most students do most of the coursework during their first year, file their applications the following summer, and finish up their theses while applying. Like ASDIC mentioned, UMDNJ-Newark's med school (NJMS) accepts a good number of the students in the program.

For the UMDNJ program at Stratford (osteopathic), only one student attempted to do it in one year last year (non-thesis). She was accepted and is currently a med student there. I have no idea how the students in their 2nd year of the program, applying this cycle, are doing.

I don't know about finishing the MS program while in med school, at least not for UMDNJ-Newark. There are a lot of medical schools that expect you to finish your graduate degree before you matriculate to the med school--some acceptances are even contingent on that. But for the Stratford program, if you get accepted to the DO school you have the option of finishing your master's while in med school. You aren't obligated to do so.

If you want to apply to a lot of medical schools and you want to have your choices open, it would be best to plan to finish the master's prior to med school matriculation.

well that extra 0.5 is done over the summer and if u get into med school, credits are transfered towards to the GSBS from the med school curriculum

I see, so it can be done in 1 school year plus 1 summer?

Is admission into the Newark and Stratford programs competitive? Does anyone know avg mcat/gpa?

Have people not done the thesis track and still gotten into the med school the next year?
