Current CA-2 in a civillian residency program looking at potential assignments. I would like to know locations where residents/attendings live in the SD area.

Is that a realistic assignment? The Navy will most likely require you to go on a utilization tour before they send you to the starship.

I was told that as someone who is coming from a civillian anesthesia residency it his highly likely that with a good CV, IE chief residency, and excellant LOR it is definetly on the list. I was told that civillian deferred residents in anesthesia are usually sent to the big three.

That's how it worked out for me.

I think its great if it works out but I'm skeptical. I was thinking they might send you to a smaller possibly and overseas command first.

Yes this is typical for anesthesia. Wish I could give you some useful information. I only know one person at NMCSD well - he rented a house on Coronado last year (awesome but expensive place to live).

Little off topic but, do most specialists just bounce around the big three during their career? Does the likelihood of continually being stationed at the big three (or perhaps just 1) increase as you sub-specialize?

I had an apartment in Hillcrest near Mercy hospital and liked it a lot. People will complain about how expensive San Diego is, but it depends on your perspective. Moving from Boston I was thrilled at how cheap San Diego was. Coronado is great, and I'd suggest it if you can find a place that works for you. I didn't because I didn't want to get caught in traffic on the bridge. However, that doesn't seem to be much of an issue. Traffic is a bigger deal on the highways, and as a result I'd discourage you from living too far out, like Chula Vista, Scripts Ranch or the like.

In general they do their payback at one hospital and get out 17 seconds after their commitment is up. The exceptions tend to be the ROTC/academy types who have longer obligation ... and a lot of them seem to homestead at one big MTF.

Yes most subspecialists tend to stay at major MTFs. You'll never see an endocrinologist, spine fellow'd orthopod, cardiologist, interventional radiologist, etc out in the sticks.
