NMS Surgery Casebook

I found NMS Surgery Casebook helpful for the shelf, especially for "what is the next step in management" type of questions.

I also used Lawrence Essentials of Surgery (recommended by my med school's surgery clerkship director - other students read NMS Surgery, not the casebook) for daily reading. The first ten or so chapters were helfpul for the shelf.

The surgery shelf is difficult (I managed to get a 79, but my clinical evaluations were good enough to help me Honor the rotation). My exam had many questions on trauma and on medical management of surgical patients.

I used this book too and thought it made for good reading for the second half of your rotation, when you know a little more and are getting ready to study for the shelf.

The shelf isn't easy but it is definitely easier than the medicine shelf. It does, of course, help to have had medicine first, but this book along with a question source is pretty good for stand alone preparation for the surgery shelf.

Used it, liked it a lot. But I just took the shelf 12/15 so I dunno how I did quite yet.

Definitely good for "next step" questions.

what question book do you guys recommend for surgery on step 2? I know for medicine there is pretest, but I have read that pre-test surg has plenty of mistakes and is not that good. Any other suggestions?

This text was written by our Dean of Students... so it was required reading. I did not take the shelf, rather an in-house exam, so I can't tell you how well it prepares you for the shelf. My clerkship group was the last to use the in-house exam and since then, I believe our students have faired well on the shelf using the book.

It is an interesting read and very applicable to the clerkship. It has some nuances in its design. For instance, an in-text block will be a continuation of the previous text - not a stand along "factoid". Once you get over this, the book is very good. I'd highly recommend it.
