I am a Navy HPSP 3rd year and am planning to apply for an inservice general surgery internship. Lately I have been trying to learn more about the surgery programs at Bethesda and NMCP.

I figured if I ended up in Bethesda, I would be able to commute via Metro. However, I was told that Metro does not operate until 5am and I am sure that I would need to be at work between 4 and 5am most mornings. Is this correct, or is it possible to use Metro? Any response is appreciated!

You will need a car...metro is not going to cut it.

You'll be tired...you won't want to waste the time.

Agree. There is housing within walkable distance, so you might not have to drive every day, but nearby property is expensive. All the same, I would suggest you rent nearby for the internship year if your personal and family needs permit. Time is precious, and Montgomery County has horrendous traffic (not at 0400, though), but if you can manage to live in or near Bethesda, there are very good amenities. Bethesda has become an urban community in an of itself.

People pay a premium for locations that cut drive time around D.C., which has peculiar effects. Locations near Metro stations are desirable, and property that is a distance from the city, if located near one of the many exurb business centers is not necessarily cheaper than property closer in to D.C. (Gaithersburg, Tyson's Corner and Dulles, e.g.)

That being said, I doubt traffic at 4 am (even on the beltway!) is much of a problem!
