Email - one from my boss, another from my friend with a joke attachment, several junk emails

I went running today for the first time in a month. I highly recommend it to people in this "club". It was very therapeutic and I felt like I released a lot of my med school admissions frustration. (although I got stomachache towards the end)
 
Yes, even the god of medicine and healing (yours truly - psyched!) hasn't gotten an acceptance yet - but I do have an interview lined up in March
at Ann Arbor.
 
Doctor Foxy: I totally understand your dilemma. I'm trying to decide if I should take the MCAT in April because I don't want to wait another 2 years to apply. But the thought of taking the MCAT really bums me out. And if I'm going to take it, I need to get my heiny in gear. I just gotta say: this sucks.
 
What about seeing where this admissions year takes you and if no acceptances, then study for the August MCAT. THen you won't have to wait 2 years. Just a suggestion.
 
Thanks for the suggestion bebe. But, if I can help it, I'd prefer not to take the August MCAT because that puts you behind in the rolling admissions process. A disadvantage I can't really afford to have with my MCAT scores.
 
maybe we can all go to law school instead????

I'm only partially joking btw...In one of my more crazier dreams, I don't get into med school this year, and go off and take the LSAT instead.

Not to get off subject on this thread, but any of you guys ever consider that or am I the only crazy one thinking of going to a completely different career if medicine doesn't work out.

From what I can tell, if you go to a good school, law does offer a stable financial future, intellectually interesting work, opportunity to work for good of society, and a certain measure of prestige (gosh - sounds like the reasons I'm applying to med school!)...

any thoughts??

I am in the same place you are. 9 interviews, 3 more scheduled but no acceptances. but got axed by MCW. I should have like it better?

My problems with law:

Intellectually but not scientifically stimulating.
Too little people contact and too much book work.
Lots of sitting at a desk -- I do that now and I can't stand it.
Although there is the possiblity of doing "good" you often have to do it at the expense of someone else, i.e., there is always a loser in law.
Is not nearly as fascinating as health care, the human body, healing, etc.

I feel you on this darkmatter. I check my email about 15 times a day hoping to receive a good word from any school. I am at work 9-5pm, so I can't really wait for the mailman. After work I rush home to get some nonsense mails and zip voice messages.

Where is my mail?????????? I have not gotten mail for the past 3 days except for 1 bill. I think there's a conspiracy at the post office to keep all of my mail to make me suffer...and my school doesn't deliver mail on saturdays. I want my mail!
 
So, last November, when I had no interviews, I posted about it and suddenly, the next day I had one. Here 'tis February, no acceptances, mayhap lightning will strike twice! (but probably not, 🙁 )
 
I finally got that "on hold" letter from rush. It said to send things that you think would help your application. I don't have enough money to donate a new wing so what do guys think about sending another letter of rec.
 
i think another letter of rec is fine..maybe also send a letter of your own restating your interest and explaining what you have done since you sent in amcas

••••Depends. Science/egineering/research backgrounds allow one to practice patent, biotechnology and health law.

Well a couple more interviews down and I'm still in it as well. Maybe by the end of the month I'll get into the big boys' accepted club.

just some advice from someone who's been there: when i didn't get in anywhere the first time i applied, i met with the adcoms at a few med schools in my area to see how i could best improve my application. i had a really candid talk with the director of admissions at one school and she flat-out told me that if you reapply, they want to see an ENTIRELY new application. they want to see a new person, basically, and i was specifically told that they actually hate it when someone simply retakes the MCAT and sends in an app that is otherwise exactly the same, because ultimately, the MCAT isn't going to be what gets you into med school. this assumes that your scores are decent to begin with, however. if you did really poorly on the MCAT, then retaking it should not even be something you think twice about, and in fact you probably shouldn't have applied in the first place until you improved your scores, because while the MCAT won't necessarily get you in, it can keep you OUT.

the universal opinion among the schools i talked to was that i should take the time i need to improve my credentials to the point where it would REALLY make a difference. so take a year off--really, in the whole scheme of life, that's not that much time, and if you play your cards right, it could potentially leave you with many more options than if you reapplied with a very similar application and managed to squeak by. take some more classes (unless you have a 4.0, improving your GPA can pay dividends). do some more volunteer work. get more rec letters. work for a year in the 'real world' (if you're currently a college student). basically, undertake a very extensive reworking of your initial app--don't just retake the MCAT. this was the advice i was given.

I can't agree more with sandflea... as someone who has applied more than once too, you definitely need to follow the advice just given, i.e., talk to admissions folks directly at the medical schools - figure out what you need to improve and then do it... Another year is no big deal in the big picture.... I applied this year at the age of 35 and have been accepted to 3 schools so far... For me, as a reapplicant, I had to fix my MCAT score and improve my GPA a bit... Good luck...

I'm starting to seriously consider moving to another state next year... somewhere where getting into the state school is not so tough

I've been reading the posts in here and had a brilliant revelation!! I BELONG IN HERE!!!!!
two interviews so far in Jan. (August MCAT'er)
heard nothing back from a bunch of schools (NYMC, Albany, Sinai, Tulane, Creighton, UConn. etc)
What a great place to vent, discuss, and get support..i'm glad you guys are here
 
half of my interviews have wound up in rejection, but there's still hope!
 
hello everyone... i would just like to let you all know that i have finally received my very first interview, at Georgetown... and it's only feb 🙂 hopefully something good will come of it, because nothing much is happening otherwise. til next time... keep your hopes up. we'll all get there someday!
 
Congrats Meg! That's a great school to interview at! You must have high stats to get one there....shows you how stupid this process is, cuz I'm sure you deserve more than 1 interview....but you're right, there's still plenty of time 🙂

Does anyone else do this? When you go to check the mail, do you look for thick envelopes FIRST and then turn them over to see where they're from. I had a HUGE mail day on Monday...three big orange manila envelopes. But, none contained an acceptance. 🙁 I'll have a dry spell for about 5-6 days followed by an avalanche of med school mail (ok maybe that's an exaggeration)!

i would hereby like to renew my membership in this club. i had 4 late interviews last year, ended up on 2 waitlists, and subsequently got into zero schools. i feel fortunate this year to have had 4 interviews again, with the fouth interview occurring earlier in the year than my first interview last year. my first interview this year was at albany, where i was placed into the "still under consideration" category. my second was at mcp hahnemann, who is supposed to be making a decision on me today. the other 2 interviews were at evms and mcv. for everyone who is waiting for that "golden" envelope, keep your chin up, i know exactly how you feel. i hope for the best for each and everyone of you.
 
Dr. Foxy, you won't have my blessing as club president, only because I fervently hope you would have the shortest term of office and be forcefully ousted by radical elements a.k.a. medical schools. And that goes for anybody in this club who have desires to the throne.
 
good luck ssd. late interviews suck ass. i hope i don't fall victim to that effect.

how late were your interviews last year (estimate what point in their respective months if you can)?
also, do you think you didn't get in because of the late interviews or because you weren't a good interviewee, and now you're better. or was your app not as good last year? i'm curious cuz i wanna know if i can get in with late interviews (ie. march stuff)
 
Caveman, you sound desperate these days. What exactly is your status?
 
Sadly I'm still a member of the club waiting on 7 schools post-interview. If any one of them would take me, life would be perfect.

I've had 3 interviews with no word yet. I have 5 more interview between this Thusday and March 28th. So I don't know what to think!

The waiting drives me nuts. I just want one acceptance!!
 
Thanks to a Columbia wait list I'm still here. I'm still holding out hope that my luck will change.
