Hi there,

Is it possible to apply to med school without having a GPA? I'm planning to finish my degree through the military and the classes don't issue a GPA, it's basically on a pass/fail system. Ive knocked out a ton of school, and have a 3.9 GPA from those classes (civilian) but my military classes + degree will offer no GPA.

You might get more responses in Pre-Med Allopathic.

Do you have a transcript of any kind from your military classes? I assume it would work, possible to your advantage if it was pass/fail.

I'll see about reposting this to another section after asking a mod. 🙂

Ill have a bachelors degree from the Air Force. Degree will be issued with a list of all classes that have been taken. As mentioned before, it's on a pass/fail system. The degree is accredited, but on many medical school applications they ask about the GPA which worries me.

Assuming a pass would be the equivalent of a 70% minimum, I would hope they could look past the simple pass/fail aspect. I don't want them to assume I have a 2.0 GPA just assuming I passed by the skin of my teeth. Being a pass/fail program it's not really possible to judge GPA sadly.

An AMCAS GPA is often different from a university GPA, but usually for the better.

Did you take your pre-reqs with a college or in the air force?

I took most of my pre-reqs through a civilian college. Not every pre-req class was taken through a civilian college, but most were. Mainly my science w/ lab classes were taken on campus and my physics w/ labs will be through a military college.

Well you WILL have a GPA because of the courses you took at a civilian college. The interesting part is that you (presumably) won't have very many graded credits overall. Also, most med schools require you to take all of your med school prereqs for a letter grade. I'm not sure if they'll make an exception for you 😕 I would recommend contacting a few schools to ask.

Have you read up on AMCAS's military credits policy? https://www.aamc.org/students/download/131750/data/2012amcasinstructionmanual.pdf Page 49

Thank you very much for the feedback as well as the link. I'll contact a few schools regarding the pre-reqs, as well as my GPA situation. I really hope I can make this work. :luck:

Another scenario would be to apply to USHUS (military medical school) but this will require 4 years active after I graduate. Hopefully the active duty time would at least count towards residency.
