I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what would happen if you didn't apply for a GPR or AEGD residency slot? What happens if you don't?

From what I understand you'll just get sent to a base and you'll start practicing. However, the military credentials their dentists...i.e THEY will be the ones to decide what types of procedures you are capable of doing. I would imagine if you have that residency you'll get to see and do much more. I have a friend who recently graduated...she got her 1st choice of AEGD locations but turned them down. She felt like she got more than enough experience in dental school. I know they dont let her do any perio surgery. Long story short...you'll just get out..and start practicing and unless you get a really good commander...you prob. wont be able to do a whole helluva lot. I dont know how right I am with this...hopefully someone w/ actual experience can comment. I'm just going w / what I know from my friends current situation.

In the AF, you are REQUIRED to apply for an AEDG-1. If you are offered one, you then have the opportunity to turn it down. If you do that, the scenario Shamrock described above is very realistic.

General dentists who don't do the 1 year are still credentialed to do most common procedures. Now what you are credentialed to do and what you are able to do are two different things. Depends how many specialists are at your base and how busy they are and how busy the clinic is.
Things you may not be able to do are third molars, molar endo, perio surgeries, restore implants. That said if you show interest in applying for a residency or just tell the specialists you would like to learn more, the good ones will give you some help. Again it depends on how busy the clinic is and if you have time to spare.
