Not that I expected to be in the first round with my stats, but man I am getting nervous and anxious. Is there anyone else that hasn't received an interview invite out there that submitted early? I know SDN is a skewed representation of the pre-med population, but it seems like everyone has invites....🙁

I had about your stats a couple of years ago and I only got 1 interview. Drexel sent me a invitation around November.

i wouldnt be too worried....your mcat and gpa are just a little low...i would be worried if you were getting alot of rejections which you arent....you have just been deferred at most of the schools where they are waiting to see the quality of applicants who apply in the coming months....im sure you'll get some interviews once everyone is done applying in the coming months.....

Hmmm...

This may be because you have not one, but two strikes against you, unfortunately.

The first strike is, of course, your GPA. While the upward trend starting in sophomore year is really good, schools that just set cut-offs are likely to miss the trend. And let's be honest: given the sheer number of applicants to med school, a lot of schools are doing just that. The second strike is your MCAT. Schools are more likely to believe in an upward trend once you crack 30 on that bad boy. You came reeeeally close, but you aren't quite there.

I think you may well find yourself with interviews later on in the season, so don't start freaking out completely.

But the good news is that, in a worst-case scenario, both of these issues can be relatively easily worked upon. In the unfortunate event that you need to reapply, you'll have had a year to pull up that GPA and also more time to study for the MCAT. If you get mostly A's this year, you should be able to pull up your stats to ~3.4 BCPM and ~3.6 Overall GPA, right? Likewise, if you could just eek out one more point on the MCAT, it could push you into a whole new admissions bracket.

So the bottom line is that I really hope you get in this year! But if you don't, you should definitely, definitely not give up. Just bring those numbers up a teensy bit more!

Frogs

EDIT: Oh, I see- you've already graduated. Well, I still stand by my advice- you just need to take more scinece classes as either a post-bacc student or in a formal SMP program to raise that GPA. But it can be done, my friend, especially with someone with an upward trend like yours!

I agree with your comments, I will most definately take the MCAT over again and apply next year if need be. I graduate in December and have been able to raise my overall to 3.51 and science to 3.32 thus summer and if I do well this last semester I can raise it even further (3.54/3.38)). But, hopefully I will get some love this round and wont have to worry about taking the MCAT over again.
Thanks for your comments.
Is there anyone else in a similar situation out there?

By the way, nice improvement on the MCAT!!! If I have to take it again that would be nice!

Hang in there, buddy! Your stats are not bad. Most med schools are just dragging their asses around this time of year. Since you've done pretty much all you can at this point, why not grab a cold beer, and chill?

Also, have you considered osteophatic? Their deadline is still a bit further on... Might be a good backup plan.

Backup plans are always good. Mine was to go for a PharmD. Also, you still have time; have you thought D.O.?

Yowza; I apologize for the poorly constructed sentence, but Grey's is on!

i was just remarking that the previous poster mentioned d.o. programs. all is forgiven for grey's, even my own fastidious sarcasm.

Had your stats and applied for two years. First year I took Aug. MCAT -- NOT ONE INTERVIEW. second year got ONE allo interview (and I got it early). No rejections until Feb or Mar. Just got the last pile of rejections in July actually. Lovely time. I actually applied to DO schools the second year after researching them during the first app cycle. I found I really (REALLY) love the DO school I'm in now. Perhaps not your style. But I found it suited me far better than an allo school.

I did have two things you don't have -- I had 10+ years of experience as a paramedic in the field (and volunteered for over 8,000 hours in the medical field), and I was older than you. Don't expect any love from CU - they completely ignored me. I hope they give you more love than they did me. (Yes, I was from Colorado too).

Your age is a BIG plus on your side vs my situation. Keep your chin up, don't take "no" for an answer, keep in touch with schools. And try again next year if necessary.

ahhh...if you dont get in this year.....**** it, you are too young anyhow! Go ski bum for a couple years-thats what I did and I am 27 now and I would never give up those years!

just wanted to let you know I also applied in June and without interviews. I shelled out the moola for som DO apps a month and a half ago. I really like the DO thing (my mentor's a DO) so I'll be happy going that route. I am still working on the MD schools too though to keep my options open. I am sending out updates/letters of interest this upcoming week. The fabulous people the schools are accepting now are getting a lot of multiple acceptances and can't go everywhere, so I figure the schools will get around to us low tier applicants a little later in the season. It can't hurt to remind them you're alive in the meantime.👍

That is exactly why my GPA is low in the first place (freshman year skiing)...not that I regret that year I skied every Tues/Thurs/Sat. Sure wish I could do that now....

Thanks for the support, I have filled out my ACOMAS and have been hearing some great things about the DO schools. The majority of Doctors I have worked with were DOs, and they were great. I think it is just my pride, I need to drop it.

Hey OP, I'm in the same boat as you but what worries me is that I have a 4.0 GPA and 36 MCAT!!! Now that I have the good numbers that everybody emphasizes, I think that they are overrated. I do have decent/good EC's as well. I have been complete since mid aug at most schools....go figure....

Good luck anyway. :luck:

off topic... is that Crested Butte, CO in your avatar?

Although Crested Butte is a great place to ski, my avatar is of the Grand Teton, Wy.
They do look similar now that I look at it more

me too! i need to get over it. SDN is probably not the best place to hang out if one is trying to swallow one's pride 🙄
