Am I the only person that hasn't had a single interview invite? I applied to 38 schools too! This whole process is making me depressed. I just want to +pissed+

BTW, congrats to those who have interviews and are accepted!

I just wrote a reply to another thread but I know a guy that has a ~3.5-3.6, 31 MCAT, pretty good ECs and has gotten rejected at more than half his 20+ schools he applied to without any interviews. It just goes to show that this process can get pretty rough at times.

Alex

38 schools = cali applicant.

did you turn your apps later than most?

i know its hard for us cali peeps but keep some hope. tho the homestretch is coming up soon...a number of schools...some of which i am sure on your list of 38 schools interview till april.

the only thing i had going for me was that i turned in my apps hella early and ive been fortunate.

wow...quick responses!

I sent my primary in early july. I also sent in my 2ndaries within less than a week. However, I don't think my application was complete for review because my lors got in late...all because of 1 professor.

Yup, I'm a cali resident. I applied to all the cali schools (got rejected at all except USC and UCLA) and 30 of the lowest ranked US medical schools.

I'm just frustrated because everyone seems to have multiple interviews/acceptances...and here I am still waiting.

Hey don't worry about it too much just yet. My bf is also a cali resident who applied early and he only has one interview. He had a decent gpa, high mcats, great ec's etc. He also got screwed by the LORs, or rather one of the people writing. One prof wrote "she" instead of "he" throughout the letter. +pissed+ That's hurt him at a lot of places, but he's still keeping up his hopes. The rest of his letters were amazing, but it's funny how they focused on that one. 🙄

keep the hope, premed!

schools are still interviewing (though some schools are done sending out invites).

being a cali resident is especially though, because we don't have our state schools to "fall back" on.

best of luck!

Any way to find out what that professor wrote on your LOR? Talk to your pre-med advisor on what you need to improve, and look for any hints towards "better" LORs.

what are your stats and ec's like "premed", if you dont mind sharing them with us of course. also, where did you go to undergrad.

I am in the same boat you are in. The rejections keep flowing in...
3.4-3.5 bcpm, 3.3-3.4 gpa, 32L MCAT, diouble major + minor, lots of ECs....
It is the most frustrating thing in the world....

Don't mind sharing at all...sharing is caring...

UCLA for undergrad
B.S. Biochemistry + Computer Specialization
Graduated 4 years

3.03 AMCAS Total
2.91 AMCAS BCPM
3.36 UCLA GPA
UCLA allows you to retake any grades of C- or lower and replace it. AMCAS GPA counts both grades.

MCAT
April 02
8 VR, 8 PS, Q WR, 11 BS
August 02
8 VR, 14 PS, Q WR, 11 Bs

Tons of ECs
Involved with starting pre-med club
Officer for pre-med club twice
Research 4 years
5 publications (both clinical and basic sciences): 4 abstracts (1 first author...presented 2 of them at conferences), 1 paper
Clinical volunteer at VFC 2 years
Volunteered at 3 Bone Marrow Drives

Great LORS...well I got to read 2 of them and 1 I wrote the outline (7 total)

Had great feedback regarding my personal statement from several physicians. It was about my experience as a bone marrow donor and how it led me to this point...med school apps.

After speaking with ALOT of medical students and physicians, I was told to apply to ALOT of medical schools. Since my application was awesome minus the GPA, I was told I have a great chance of getting into a lower tier school. Simultaneously applying to GT SMP. What'ya think?

Wow you went from an 8 PS to a 14! Holy crap that's marvelous feat. Just goes to show how iffy the MCAT is. My brother's friend went from a 21 to a 34.

SMP eh? You seem like a decent candidate. I think you *might* be able to get in w/o it. Did you apply early this year? Your stats are just a little below mine. Bone marrow drive, I had a long discussion about that at one of my interviews, i thikn it help me get in. Do you do it through AADP or the Cammy Lee Foundation?

premed-
how did you increase your PS score by 6 points in only 4 months? i am so impressed! i'm considering re-taking to improve my BS score.

Thanks for all the responses...

exmike...I donated bone marrow to my sister when I was 10. However, I am currently on the bone marrow registry through NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program). BTW, I emailed you awhile back about the GT SMP...what were your opinions of the program?

The 6 point increase on my MCATs (all on PS) is actually a long story. When I took my first MCAT, I did so at UCLA (Franz Hall...lecture hall with tiny desks!). During the PS section, there was an incessant and extremely loud hammering next door. Although I tried my best to ignore it, I became extremely agitated. About 5 min. later, an older lady in front of me got fed up and shouted to the proctor to go check it out. Then he got up looked outside the door without leaving the room and just shrugged. That wasted another minute or so. Hammering went on for 20 min. Anyways, point is...when they called the 5 min. warning, I had 25 questions blank. I circled all B's and ended up getting an 8. On the AAMC practice tests, I don't think I got lower than a 12 on PS. Also, during the VS, the proctor called time 1 min. early. Then when we all yelled at him because we had another minute, he gave us one...didn't help at all since everyone already rushed through the section. Experience was horrible!

nibrocli...I studied starting about 6 weeks before the august exam and unfortunately couldn't increase any of my other sections...although I had alot more knowledge in biology. This leads me to believe that the MCAT is not based on knowledge but is more like an IQ test. You have to first get a good background on the basics...then studying more doesnt help much. Best thing to do is keep practicing. It's kind of like a saturation curve. As you first study, scores go up...but with time your score will barely increase and you may even level off. I tutored several friends in PS only to realize that they couldn't grasp some of the strategies I used. Similarly, I can read a verbal passage and will arrive at a completely different conclusion than other friends that easily attain 10+ scores. I never read when I was younger, which probably explains it. Anyways, if you want to just increase your BS, you should only retake the MCAT if you are scoring at least 3 points higher on the BS section of practice tests while still getting similar scores on your other sections...gluck!
