ANyone thinking about not doing a residency and going out into the business world? I'm confused right now. A part of me wants to leave the practice of medicine and use my knowledge in business.

Do a residency. You just don't know enough as a freshly minted MD/DO to be of great value even in the business world. At least do a year or two (whatever it takes by your state to get a license).

you could always do research after medical school...I don't think that requires a Residency...(correct me if I'm wrong...)

True, you don't need residency training to do research, but you probably need some sort of formal research training. There are several labs that will take new MDs, but you aren't able to do much on your own.

one of my pals who graduated last year went straight out into the buisness world manufacturing custom designed surgical instruments. I was also thinking of going this route and asked him basically the same question you asked.

He says that most buisness-persons are not even aware of the pre-med, med school, residency, fellowship, attending track. They are just impressed with the M.D. behind your name. Think about it... if you went up to your aunt Gladis and said "I'm a doctor", is she going to ask "where did you do your residency?".

Most MBA's don't care about residency because they aren't even aware of how people become practicing doc's. They only care about the M.D. behind your name. We will soon have arguably THE most prestigous degree available. Buisness folk eat this up, even if they don't understand it.

FYI, I am doing an intern year, so I can moonlight, but that's it.

It sure is a pretty damn expensive (and difficult) degree to have if all you are after is prestige. MD degree without residency = no license = you can't even write your asthmatic Aunt Gladis for some Serevent even if she asked you. 😛

But I definitely have heard this from a few friends who are in business in NYC now. They say their boss would dig someone with MD degree to death and hire with lovely signing bonus, etc. And they were trying to recruit me to their company after I graduate... I was like LOL...

You could do research without doing a residency, but you'd be somewhat useless without your license. Most research teams want an MD because he/she can work with medications. Without a license, you can't do that. I imagine you'd need to at least do an intern year so that you can take step 3.
