What are applicants supposed to do if they havent heard from schools yet about the status of their application and the school says that students should not call or contact the admissions office? Just give up? Its kind of late in the cycle and I am getting worried...

There are a handful of schools which are still giving out interviews (GW and Rosalind Franklin come to mind), but they are the exception. Most schools have already handed out their final invites, and will wrap up interviews and decisions by March. So, unless you know for a fact that the school interviews through April or May, if you haven't heard from them by now you're probably out of luck. (I know how it feels: I have a number of schools like this.)

The only way to really know what's going on is to call the school and ask, even if they discourage it. But be prepared to hear unwelcome news (i.e. "We've already given out all our interviews for this year"). If the school is still issuing invites, it would probably be wise to email them a letter of interest, just to put your name in front of them one more time and reiterate your interest in the school.

Get ready for AMCAS 2010. Also, I don't think any school has the policy of "don't ever contact us." If you are curious, give them a call -- it's so late in the cycle that it can't hurt at this point.

you can check on the school specific threads here to see what's happenning with others who have applied to that school

I can commiserate about this -- maybe an applicant should respond "no problem, just don't cash my secondary check until we can schedule 15 minutes to discuss the status of my application". Fortunately, many schools are cool being contacted by applicants provided the contact is infrequent.

I was in this position last year. Some schools didn't decide to tell me anything until April or even May. I'd get ready to re-apply just in case. If any of the schools offer exit interviews with the dean I'd jump all over that opportunity. They'll tell you why you weren't accepted/interviewed and that can give you a lot of help for polishing up your application. After my exit interviews last year I changed a lot about my app and now I have 3 acceptances!

This is what I did:

1. Applied earlier
2. Applied more broadly
3. Overhauled personal statement per suggestions of adcoms
4. Emphasized some ECs differently (amazingly some schools will ignore ECs if they aren't categorized how they expect them to be, nice huh?)
5. Got more clinical experience

Now I suppose SDN could have told me all of that too but it was very reassuring to hear straight from the adcoms what they thought was lacking in my app.

Cannot overemphasize #1 & #2. For me, these coupled with a higher MCAT made my app golden this time 🙂

Best of luck!!
