Hey guys so I'm a Texas resident applying this cycle; submitted my primary TMDSAS in early July, secondaries by mid-August. My stats are 3.95 with a 507 with pretty unique ECs, shadowing, research, etc. I haven't heard back from any med schools yet so idk if I should start panicking just yet 🙁 I would love to be accepted into A&M, UTMB, or the Techs. Is there hope or should I just prep for an MCAT retake? Thanks!

Don't panic until November, your stats are fine. I got an II yesterday and submitted it in the summer. Patience is a virtue during these times. Your MCAT should be fine for the instate mid-tiers. Consider sending a letter expressing interest in a few weeks though IMO

Your gpa is great and your mcat is not bad. What was the breakdown if you don’t mind us asking?

Also how many secondaries did you receive? And from which schools?

I just did TMDSAS plus one AMCAS, so if you know the TX schools you should be kinda familiar about the secondary process. That being said, I did secondaries for all except Dell (so far)

It's great to be a Texan pre-med. You'll get in. Texas MD schools are really diamonds in the rough.

The perception that Texas is somehow better chances than the overall AMCAS aggregate hasnt be true for at least a decade. While it is certainly better than some states, it is no where near the panacea that many premeds make it out to be. Also there is the issue of schools outside of Texas that seem to take Texas residency as a factor in acceptance. That is they believe residents will be more likely to matriculate at the less expensive Texas schools and therefore residency may depress acceptance rates. Finally Texas population continues to grow and the size of the instate applicant pool with it. So I suspect any bump in matriculation rated from new Texas medical school will be modest at best

So you’re saying that OOS schools, even private ones, are less likely to interview/accept texas residents because they’d be more likely to ditch an OOS school in favor of in state tuition?

Do you think that this has a bearing on merit scholarships? For example, a school may be more willing to give a Texas resident a scholarship, knowing that they need to poach them away from in state tuition?

Unless you are a superstar, which is under 5% of acceptees, there is little reason to offer merit scholarship to “poach” students. Additionally, schools may not want to reward students who may want to go else where and instead reward those who are already committed to them. Indeed many schools do not produce financial aid info until after a student has committed; scholarships are typically not awarded until at least Spring.

That’s an interesting point, I’ve heard a lot of different ideas. To me, it wouldn’t make sense for a school to give money to kids who were going to matriculate anyway. Rather, i would think that merit scholarships would be offered to highly sought after applicants to encourage them to go there (ie students that would likely have offers at multiple schools)

Submitting earlier wouldn’t hurt either. Your secondaries complete your app, which you stated were finished around Mid-August. Applications take time to review.

I used this website to figure out what secondary questions were out there. All my stuff was in by late June early July. Didn’t hear back from an interview I think till late August but most of them in mid/late September.
