Zegna's ties are high quality. I love mine. Also, I wouldn't wear a red tie at an interview!
A red tie symbolizes power, and typically you don't want that for an interview. Go with a brown or blue tie, which symbolizes honesty and humility.

EDIT: Glad I'm not the only one wearing Brioni/other expensive tie brands in medical school. Good quality ties are the best (same with shoes...).

Good shoes can last decades. I like Alden, probably partially because it's a US company, and it was good enough for Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. However, I'm planning to take a trip to NYC soon and while there I'm going to up my shoe game with a semi custom last. It's going to be sweet.

British brand shoes are very nice, but they worn out super quickly. They're only good for walking in the office!
I wore red ties to all my interviews and did just fine. I wear a blue suit and like the contrast between the colors. I don't think wearing a tie of a certain color actually implies something like power vs humility.

blue suit, red 5$ amazon tie , 25$ dress shoes, and doing pretty alright with my cycle 😉

Obviously it's a subtle/subconscious thing. It's not like, "Oh you got a red tie on, you're powerful" or "Oh you got a blue tie on, you're humble." Those Wall Street guys could probably explain this better.

Loll, actually I down-spent on my suit to make myself look more humble. I think having a cheap, but decent looking (or expensive but simple/cheap looking) suit works much better than a flashy one.
Loll I know, just never heard that before. Glad I didn't hear it before interviews or else it would've sub-consciously played an effect on me to. That "what if there's that 1% chance this negatively affects me .... ok fine, brown tie it is."
Do you have any experience with Edward Green, John Lobb, or Gaziano & Girling?

We had an interviewee a few weeks ago show up in khakis, an Under Armour golf polo, and some very nice looking Nikes. Unfortunately, our interview groups are rather small (<10 students) and you traditionally meet with the Dean/Associate Dean in a small conference room.

I was in the elevator yesterday with an army of peds resident hopefuls. It was like the clone army descended on the hospital. Dark charcoal/black suits and white/off white shirts across the board. The only variability was in the shoes. And there were some questionable choices...
If you're going to wear god awful shoes, at least polish the damned things.

There's a huge difference between a department store tie that you spend $50-80 on and a tie that costs $100+ (especially the ones that cost $150-about $200). Quality doesn't really change much after the $200 mark. I can hang my Drakes ties in my closet and see the wrinkles come out within 1-3 hours, not to mention that they have a very nice fabric and good drape. They also tie very superb knots. This gives my outfit a more polished appearance, along with my shoes. You can say that they cost a lot, which is true, but the investment is worth it.
The funny thing about ties and shoes is that they can make other aspects of your wardrobe that you spent less on (relatively speaking) look better, but the same is not true vice-versa. Cheap, low-quality dress shoes and ties are the bane of all medical students.

The patients may not care, but cheap shoes and ties are usually pretty obvious to anyone looking. Don't be that guy, unless you really can't stretch a bit to afford some decent clothes.
Allen Edmonds are a good choice and they can often be found on sale if you can't swing Alden's which are rarely on sale and can cost ~1/3 more.

If you buy factory seconds Allen Edmonds from the Shoe Bank, you can get them even cheaper... for about the same price as any dress shoe you'd find in the mall (just better). I am of the opinion that you ought to buy the best you can afford. Saving money for the sake of saving money by buying the cheapest thing you can buy is no virtue, but if you can hit the "sweet spot" between quality and value, then that is a smart choice.
My allen edmonds were a gift and I can fully attest that I will not be being full price next time around ahahaha. I do absolutely love them though.
