No tie?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you buy factory seconds Allen Edmonds from the Shoe Bank, you can get them even cheaper... for about the same price as any dress shoe you'd find in the mall (just better). I am of the opinion that you ought to buy the best you can afford. Saving money for the sake of saving money by buying the cheapest thing you can buy is no virtue, but if you can hit the "sweet spot" between quality and value, then that is a smart choice.
I couldn't agree more. AE's are the real deal and the Shoe Bank is a gem. If you get lucky, you can find 3 pairs for around the same price as ONE pair retail. I LOVE my AE's.

....I gotta ask, so did OP actually get his tie?? I'm assuming he did by everyone telling him to get one.

Tf is wrong with a red tie? NAvy suit, white shirt, red tie for the win. Who are you people?

Med school interviewee.

Also, a simple Google search of "What color tie to wear for interview?" will provide further insight.

Pansy ass liberal democrats, no doubt. Thanks for the comfy cork footbed in my wingtips you damned tree huggers.

But... But.... Donald Trump IS a conservative, and he wears that!

Off-topic, but you would never believe how many medical students I saw recently (volunteering to help out) wearing Donald Trump-esque suits and ties. #MIGA #Grabembythetie

That's the point. The question was what's wrong with the people saying no red ties at med school interviews. I have my theory...

God I hope you're joking. A simple google search of "conservative formal attire" will do you some good.

I'm a Sagittarius btw. We are known for being arrogant pricks yet cleverly cheeky and med schools know this so I'm probably auto screened right.

Just lol.

Just stroll up in an interview with a $7000+ bespoke Brioni suit, red tie, french cuff Charvet shirt with gold cufflinks, and high-end bespoke shoes. To finish off the look, simply wear an Aesclepius lapel pin and genuine horn-rimmed eyeglasses. When they ask you if you have any interest in any particular field in medicine, tell them (with a smug grin) "Orthopedic surgery."

Do not forget your 18K Cartier watch, automatic of course (because quartz is for plebs).

Best thing I've read all day. Bravo.

Sure, if that's how you want to present yourself, be my guest. Good luck!

Ok, listen up you little slags, because this is important.

That shiny red Donald Trump tie is goddamn repugnant. Yeah, his suits are nice, but that shiny red tie is a war crime against good taste. Actually, scratch that - ANY solid-colored tie with that shiny texture should be off limits to anyone who's not selling a monorail to an economically depressed rust belt town with a heroin problem. Have some respect for yourself and the eyes of people who have to look at you.

edit: after doing a google search on tie color and interviews, the jury is still out but I will say my mind was blown at what I read. Tf has time to think that much about tie color. Hats off to you @poloboy. I am defeat.

Still wearing my red tie though...... In a full windsor with my navy suit and heavily starched pressed white shirt. My tie isn't red as in trumps though just lol. It's darker toned with dots so maybe we're not on the same page. It's burgundy.

Burgundy pin dot is probably the classiest and is not the same as a red tie. It's confident without being overly aggressive and hard on the eyes.

I don't think people follow fashion that much to care on the interview trail but if you do care and have the choice between a solid red tie vs burgundy/pindot vs some other color, red should probably be last.

Agreed. Burgundy (especially a subtle matte pattern) is classy, timeless, and sincere. However, IMO it's best with a black, or better yet, dark charcoal suit. With a navy suit it could work, but I think that's a definite "wear brown shoes" situation, and getting the right brown shoes for such a color scheme could be tricky.

Of course. I wore a pair of walnut Allen Edmonds with that tie 🙂. It might have come across as a bit "flashy", but they have a nice patina from a lot of polishing/conditioning. If I was being picky, I'd probably pair it with an oxblood cap toe.

P.S. Make sure your belt matches your shoes as well (or is at least close).

Omg the Asclepius lapel pin killed me

He had me at "Quartz is for plebs". LMAO

Every single tie in my tie collection is navy and burgundy. I kid you not. The only diversity I have is texture, weave style, dots, or stripes. I am so boring. At least I'll get some Drakes ties with "UK stripes" to diversify my striped ties soon.

I thought I had you at "Hello." </3

*whistles* Now that, gentlemen, is an ensemble to be confident in. Two questions:

1) I'm guessing you went with with the navy suit. I personally would go with a "medium" navy color, but someone more ambitious than me might go with a lighter navy. IMO dark navy would be out. What did you go with?

2) white or off-white shirt?

Get a white shirt with spread collar.

Oh, and THESE shoes: http://www.crockettandjones.com/product/audley-darkbrown

I went with a med-dark navy. Lighter navy was too risky IMO 😉. You only want to stand out a little. I also went with a white tailored dress shirt with a spread collar.

Unless you are one of the few who have an eye for which ties look good (I do not) you're much better off asking someone at whichever store you're at instead of getting conflicting advice from us tie novices[emoji38]

This thread is hilarious. I love SDN.

Style is no joke, sir. I plan to be the best dressed physician in the hospital. Haha.

😉

Go to a high end store, ask them for advice, and then go buy a cheaper tie elsewhere. The people at the nicer stores (Nordstrom, BB, Saks, etc.) are trained better and usually have a pretty solid sense of style.

When in doubt, go boring (Light Blue, Burgundy, Navy, Grey)

Be sure to ask them for a cold glass of mineral water, too, before you decide to buy elsewhere. You can even have them order a pair of shoes for you, then you tell them "nevermind" once the shoes come in. (Don't do that, you jerk.)

This was meant to be used only when you're "in a pinch". Instead, go to styl........I mean....Student Doctor Network Forum and ask there instead 🤣🤣

My shoes and tie from last weekend (the red is darker than it looks in this photo). It is SO DIFFICULT to get a nice shine on walnut leather:

I just got a chance to look at those dark brown Crockett & Jones shoes you posted....

I've always found darker leathers to show a shine better than lighter shades of brown. Personally, I just pay to have my shoes professionally shined. As a medical student, I really don't have the time to try to do it myself, especially on several pairs...

As far as the C&Js, I have a pair of black Audleys being delivered tomorrow. 👍

For the record, I wear a medium-navy suit with a matching belt with these bad boys.

Donald Trump's suits are as topical as his views on society. It's not so much his tie that makes him look frumpy, or his actual suit (Brioni makes exceptional ones), but the ill fit and lack of care he puts into the details of his appearance. Even the length of his tie is too long; it's between his legs like the tail of a frightened dog. He pays too much attention to the prestige and quality of the items he buys, but not to the little details (wrinkling, fit, length), that distinguish a well-dressed man from a frumpy Humpty Dumpty. Lesson? Pay attention to the details and fit of each item, perhaps just as much as the actual quality.
Actually, I have no idea why I am on this thread. I'm just a girl who just read the style issue of GQ in the waiting room.

You're an example of a girlfriend who is considered a "keeper"

What if he decided to wear assless chaps because his fingers are too short to pull the wedgies out?

Then he wears assless chaps and gets someone else to pull the wedgies out for him. He's still the boss.
