Well. I didn't want to even go there. I was referring to the masterful mess-up by Michael Brown during Hurricane Katrina. I think everyone saw what a mess it was down there. While New Orleans was built in a stupid place, that the government didn't do more to help those people sooner should be considered criminal neglect.

I love how everyone blames someone for hurricane Katrina.

It's a NATURAL DISASTER----has anyone thought about blaming the disaster on the HURRICANE ITSELF???????????????

no one ever blames katrina on someone

it was the extremely poor emergency response that gets blamed on people

Bush and his administration acknowledged that they screwed up in their response to Katrina, so he did take the blame for it.

The extremely poor emergency response is due to the fact that it was the largest natural disaster in US history.

did gas reach $3.50 a gallon?

No one is forcing you to drive. If you can't afford the price of gas, then either walk, carpool, ride a bike, or take public transportation and stop complaining.

so the larger a disaster is, the longer emergency crews should wait until they help?

Yes, the larger a disaster is, the longer it will take emergency crews to get to ground zero. This is simple physics.

That's right---we are back on topic.

i just think its outrageous that the oil companies are breaking record with ~40 billion per year profits (overtop all expenses including salaries) while millions of people struggle

it affects everything, even township budgets are affected because the cost to have polica officers drive their cars around dramatically increases

all for what, so a couple people can buy some new helicopters

but you think thats perfectly normal

Not to mention that Katrina took a different path than what was expected at the very last minute. People in New Orleans barely had enough time to evacuate. If there had been more warning, the federal response would have likely been much sooner.

You don't even listen (or read). I never said that it was Bush's fault that Hurricane Katrina happened. It was his fault that he signed off on a certain Michael Brown who completely mismanaged the disaster response. There should have been divisions of National Guardsmen there to handle the response. Sadly, they were all in Iraq.

It is normal. It's called supply and demand, simple economics.

Unfortunately I have to drive for my job. I'm a self-employed speech-language pathologist who sees kids in their homes for speech therapy services. I live in a rural area, and I drive about 500 miles a week, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Being surrounded by states where gas is $.50 or more cheaper a gallon pisses me off. It's the same damn gas. But then again, it's Illinois. We've had a serious lack of leadership in this state forever, and Chicago is the worst (as far as administration and leadership goes). At least I don't have to pay taxes living in chicago! 😱 Gas prices are nothing compared to that!

Are you kidding? I remember for days they were talking about how New Orleans was screwed. They had dozens of experts come on to talk about the levee system etc. before the hurricane hit.

Any time there is a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico I'd imagine it's time to start mobilizing the disaster response unit to the Bible Belt.

We all know that future earthquakes will devastate California as well. Would your solution be to go ahead and evacuate the state?

Maybe you should run for president!

Ahhhhhhh.

Not to mention the fact that it was a category 5 hurricane.

"The NHC issued a hurricane watch for southeastern Louisiana, including the New Orleans area at 10 a.m. CDT August 27. That afternoon the NHC extended the watch to cover the Mississippi and Alabama coastlines as well as the Louisiana coast to Intracoastal City. President George W. Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi two days before the hurricane made landfall."
