Hey everyone
I hope you can help me out .
I am an IMG who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a PR holder.
I am currently in Canada with a study permit . I want to know if Canadian citizenship is a must to apply for a residency match ?

You must have PR to match in Canada.

Yes, you need PR or Citizenship to apply for residency. The only non-PR people who match are those sponsored by their foreign governments.

is it absolutely necessary for an IMG to apply for residency in Canada before he can practice? or is it possible for an IMG to start practicing as a GP in rural areas once he has passed all necessary exams and not apply for residency training in Canada?

you have to finish residency first before you can practise and you have to have PR to get residency so....
