hi all, im a third year who has had an interest in oncology and is scheduled to do a research year between 3rd and 4th year in basic sciences/translational research in new treatments for lung cancer.

the thing is, i set this up a while ago (the PI is a surgeon) and after having just completed my surgery rotatation, have come to the definitive conclusion that i want to go into rad-onc with diag-rads as my backup; IE i set up the research b/c i wanted to go into surg, but that is no longer the case

my question is, would it even benefit me much to do the year of research? it is at the institution that is my first choice for residency, regardless of field. obviously, i know that during a rad-onc interview, it may be much more relevant, but how about in a diagnostic-rads interview?

fwiw, i have no real research to speak of (no pubs) and just some chart studies that went nowhere. any advice would be of great help. thanks!

"Unrelated" research is better than no research, but in this case you may want to speak to the PI and respectfullu explain that your interests have changed. This way, you won't be taking up a spot in the lab that someone else may better benefit from, and the PI may also be able to tell you about or even help get you into a study that's closer to what you're interested in.
