Hi everyone - I am hoping to apply it this cycle as I am currently a Junior.. however I had a question regarding the classes that I will be taking.

I am a Psychobiology major at UCLA so the majority of my upper division classes will be psychology classes which for the most part as I understand it - do not count as science classes. Do you think this will hurt me as an applicant? I considered changing my major so that I would be taking more upper division science classes; however, it turned out to be unfeasible.

Getting into / having the pre-requisites to take upper division classes is kind of tough not being a strictly science major at my school. Therefore, I do not know if I should just continue with my major - taking the psychology classes required and having them most likely not count as being "upper div science" or if I should try to get into some upper division biology classes that do not count for my major - just for my application? Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Possibly with the same major? I know that we must decide what to consider each class and there are some psychology/psychobiology classes that are heavy on science - would I be able to count these as science classes on AADSAS? Or are all classes with a psych prefix just flat out non-science?

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions ><

Your right, every class offered in the psych dept will count as nonscience (even 115). It's just a technicality. What I tell every psychobio pre-dent is to take advantage of every science class that their major allows (and maybe even one extra). That means taking EEB 100 instead of Psych 118 and making use of your four upper div electives. I recommend choosing from: Chem 153A and 153L, PhySci 166, EEB M158, MIMG 185A, Neuro 102, or MCDB 138. I would also recommend taking one class that's not for your major: MIMG 101. Some schools (like the Arizona schools) nowadays require microbio. (I wouldn't want you to limit your school choices just because you didn't complete the pre-req coursework.) Dent schools like to see these types of classes, and I also think they'll be helpful once you get to d school. Try and take as many of these classes as you can as soon as you can. But I doubt that you'll be able to add any for spring at this point. You really should have acknowledged this potential obstacle earlier, so that someone could have told you about the best options. But I dont think it'll be too much of a problem; you can always do an academic update at some point in the app cycle to show them what classes youve been taking. Hopefully, by that time, you will have taken some of the classes listed above. Alright, good luck then.. and good luck on finals this week!

I'm a pscyh major too, but here at my campus their requirements are so light that a person can finish their BA degree in 3 years. For myself I just made sure to take summer classes and at the moment plan to stay maybe a quarter or two longer than I intended but it's going to be during my gap year anyways so no biggie.
