Hello guys,

I am currently doing a 1-year post-bac, and thinking about applying next year. So currently, I'm starting to sum up all the requirements to make sure I have everything ready by next June or so.

The problem is, most med schools generally require (or at least prefer) 3 rec letters, 2 from science professor, 1 from non science professor. Currently I am taking many science courses, so I think I will be able to get 2 letters from science professor. However, I have no source to get a non-science letter from current institute. Back in undergrad, I was not an active student who had a close relationship with professor, so I have a hesitation to go back and ask them to write me a letter for me. Even if I can get one, I don't think it would be a really good one.

Does anyone had a similar situation like me?

Any suggesion?

Thank you guys!

Evening course in the humanities, speak up in class, ask for rec letters?

Seems like the best option if you'd like to finish by June, provided it won't be too difficult with your post-bacc.

Thanks for your opinion. So do you think it's worth it to take one class (that I'm interested in) from post-bac institute?

I thought about it before, but I was just worried that it might look kinda like "I took it because I wanted to get a non sci letter" among all those sciecne classes... 🙁 By the way, I am doing a post-bac as a academic enhancer.

I'm pretty sure the deal is that you need one non-science letter but it doesn't have to be a professor... I got one from my former employer and haven't run into any problems.

The requirement varies from school to school. Some do really want a letter from a non-science professor. If it's not possible for you to ask for a generic, but still positive, recommendation from one of your old professors, then you should probably take something...

I'd recommend that you take Public Speaking and get a letter from that professor. The teacher will definitely get to know you since you'll be speaking about things that you want to talk about. Usually, every Public Speaking class does the same 3 major and 3 minor speeches. There is room to make them meaningful and thoughtful and yet still have fun with them. I think the one exception would be the minor speech for your pet-peeve.

This is a great class to go in for office hours. You can go in and ask the professor to look your speech over and get some back n forth communication going. It's also a fun class and you'll benefit from it if you have a reserved personality. Unless you go into pathology or radiology, being a physician involves being a public speaker all the time. It was also the one class where I actually got to know a lot of people in class. I don't know if it was just our class, but we were really supportive of each other. We'd cheer-on/applaud each other not only after the speech but before the speech. The teacher said that was the first time he had a class do that and thought it was cool. 😀
