While I was in college, a parent and main provider for my family passed away. My other surviving parent, an immigrant of poor English literacy, was unable to take up the responsibility left behind. I quickly matured and managed to keep my family afloat in a financially dire situation. After I graduated, I worked for a short time, but later decided that I want to be a doctor.
Currently, I’m a non-trad taking the pre-reqs as a part-time post-bacc student at a local 4-year university and am involved in volunteering and shadowing. However, I’m not working -- much of the remainder of my time is spent managing my household. I don’t need to work because my family is financially secure.
When I apply to med school next year, I’m unsure of how my managerial role can be quantified; I’m sure that there may be some concern over how my time was spent as a part-time post-bacc. How will adcoms consider my situation? Would I be able to address this in a section of the application?
