Not hating (obviously) but this thread just made me think how it must suck to be a non-trad who's been supporting him/herself for like ten years and then to have to hit up mom and dad for financial info so you can fill out Need Access and everything

Never had to do that for the school or FASFA- not even in college. Most places will allow you to omit that if you are independent or over a certain age. I think at most I may have made a quick estimate when filling out TMDSAS.

It affects your institutional aid eligibility though.

It's not necessary for FAFSA but you might not get need based financial aid from your med school without parent info. Yes, even the people who are 30+ and have been out of their parents' home for 10+ years are advised to submit parent info. YMMV as every med school is different with how they handle that.

Yeah, at one interview, the financial aid representative was telling us how she had to tell some 60-year-old woman who was going into their PA program or something that she had to submit financial info about her 80-year-old parents

YMMV is correct. Thats what I was saying. I got plenty of need-based aid and never submitted that kind of info. School-specific I guess.

Everyone finds their own way to medicine. Not all of us knew we wanted to be docs the day we were born. It's the experiences we've had that brought us here.

If the OP isn't a troll I suspect they'll find themselves a non-trad by the time they get in. Definitely needs maturity and life experience.

This actually made me laugh. Why exactly do you think those spots belong to you? Non-trads typically do very well in medical school.

Not to mention it sort-of aligns with age discrimination, you know, an equal qualifyer with gender and race as in..."This institution does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight, or veteran status in employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions." - EO policy at just about any school or job.

Might as will make this a "URM-Religion-LGBT Hate forum as well. Way to go OP.

What the OP misses is that it isn't the age/time that gets us in, per-se. It's what we have done with that time to strengthen our applications (research, leadership, experiences, etc).

That's like telling a trad student who had a significant accomplishment on their app that they had to discount it because it made them a better applicant. Non-trads often (not always) have the ability to actually contemplate the "why's" of choosing medicine. Like I said, most of us came to medicine from very different avenues--often triggered by our experiences or events.

In their defense, I completely understand the frustration. Trads worked often just as hard academically/recently as non-trads to get here. It would suck to think that you lost out on an opportunity because someone had significantly more time to broaden their applications. That being said, it isn't something that the OP won't be able to do in time, themselves. We all have time. Some just spent it on the front end.

lol... every single non-trad applicant I've ever met (including myself) took time off to work a full-time job while studying for the MCAT.

Stop complaining and do what you have to do to get in.
