Hi there,

What does it exactly mean to be non-trad student. Is there something on the app that discusses being a trad or non-trad student?

Just curious.

Michael

Hi there,
A non-traditional applicant generally has been in another career before applying to medical school. There is nothing on the AMCAS application that indicates non-traditional status nor does being a non-traditional applicant give you any advantage over being a re-applicant or traditional applicant. Most non-traditional applicants are older with families but this is not always the case. Some non-traditional applicants are the same age as a traditional applicant who started college a couple of years later and then went straight to medical school.

As a group, non-traditional medical students tend to not do as well in medical school or on the MCAT as traditional applicants but every medical student is an individual and being non-traditional does not limit what you can achieve. As a non-traditional student or applicant, you are not singled out or treated any differently from your fellow medical students.

The differences for non-traditional students generally involve making sure that families are taken care of while you pursue medicine. Finding housing, schools and childcare while pursing a demanding career. Finding health insurance for family as most student insurance plans do not cover families.

njbmd 🙂
