So here is my current situation...
I applied for the 2013(in Aug, so I was late) cycle both DO and MD application cycle
MD:applied to 16 schools(some reach ucsf, ucla, ucsd), 2 interviews(UCI, LLU)
-UCI-waitlisted(probably will not get off according to office people)
-LLU-rejected outright(not surprised given the niche nature of the school)
DO:applied to 2 school and got 2 interviews(Touro-ca, Western COMP)
-accepted to both programs right away, currently holding a Western acceptance
My application basics:
Age: 30
MCAT:30 Bio 11/VR 9/PhyS 10
*only studied 3 weeks, planning to retake and so far my AAMC avrg is 34
Cumulative UG GPA:3.45
Cumulative SGPA:3.49
Both of these GPA are markedly lower than my abilities due to my "freshman" year in 2002-2003 where I acheived a measly 2.1 gpa
My GPA from when I came back to school to when I graduated(2008-2012) was 3.94 BCPM(all my pre-med courses) and 3.98 cumulative.
I graduated in the top 5% of my class and received a full-ride at UC Davis for academics.
Graduate GPA(dental school):3.51
I dropped out after the first year to apply to medicine, I feel this is likely the reason for the poor response?
EC's
Volunteered/active in URM organization in student retention/recruitment as well as fundraising activities for 3 years(~600 hours)
2 bouts of research
-8 months Evolution/ecology research
-1 year clinical research(2 posters, one presentations, 20 hours/week)
-Shadowed ER, primary care, critical care, Internal Medicine(many specialties), Derm for a total of ~450 hours
-other random internships/clinical work for ~100 hours total
Work History:
-owned/operated two different businesses since I was 18. 1st was from 2004-2009, then I opened another during my undergrad to from 2010-2012. I made a decent living but I wanted a more challenging career.
Letters:
As far as I know they are decent, I have many from my dental school, one from a PI and the last from the doctor I have shadowed the most.
So I guess what I am asking is should I drop/defer my DO acceptance to try again or just go with it? I like Western COMP a lot but I would really like to have a shot at a UC residency and being a DO makes that a tough sell. Assuming I can raise my MCAT to 33-35(which I am pretty sure I can given enough time) would I have a decent shot? Or has my excursion to dental school pretty much ruled that out? If I do re-apply I will likely do it next year on day 1 of the application cycle.
