a family friend wants to come to the U.S. for some surgery training but hasn't matched/scrambled a few years in a row to categorical or prelim. he wants some experience and then go back home because U.S. training looks good when he goes back home to apply for advanced training. apparently there are nonaccredited residencies out there but I haven't been able to find any for general surgery. do they exist? if anyone knows of any please pm me.

I don't know of any "general Surgery" unnacredited programs. There are numerous "fellowships" in subspecialties that may that fall under that classification... i.e. pediatric surgery, pediatric MIS, endovascular, thoracic, etc....
General surgery I doubt.

There's no list, b/c by virtue of them being unaccredited, they can appear (and disappear) at will. If I wanted to start one in my basement I could. Flippant comments aside, the big question is whether your friend needs salary support. If not, I'm sure many programs would take a free intern. If he wants to be paid, it gets harder.

non-designated prelims are pretty close to unacreddited, but they get no OR experience

I know of some foreign trained guys who acted as surgical assistants in hearts, or general surgery. usually private practice guys pay for an assistant. might not be formal training, but can be good for the right person

Queens Hospital in New York used to advertise quite a bit on the APDS website something they called a "General Surgery Fellowship" program. Basically it amounted to a non-accredited General Surgery program... They claimed a bunch of their "graduates" got into General Surgery residencies eventually, but I can't say that that's been verified.

I wish I could remember the PD's name, but I can't off the top of my head. Check out www.apds.org and see if they still post the spot there. Otherwise you can try having your friend call the Chairman there and inquire.

Good luck.

I believe Washington has some sort of international grad prelim type program and proclaims some rigorous approach to prepare and potentially funnel IMG into a categorical program.....
