Hi I'm currently a premed striving to get into med school. I have a part time fashion pr internship opportunity for this summer that I am really interested in. How would this look to med school admins? My parents are really worried that this will take time from my studies. I want to do it, however, because I love fashion and planning events and what not. Also, in case I don't get into med school, I will have another career path lined up. I'm really in a dilemma right here so please help me out! Thanks in advance!

If you like to do it and want to do it, do it. It will make you look more diverse.

I'll be applying with a 3 month film internship and a 6 month zoo internship.

I think that it will look great in your application, especially if you are passionate about it. Med Adcoms want to see students who have different interests and whose lives do not revolve around medicine 24-7. That internship will make you stand out from the crowd of premeds who spend all their summers doing academic or medically related stuff.

If you are a freshman, you have plenty of time to get some clinical shadowing. Tell your parents to relax.

Also, remember that anything that makes you a happy and balanced human will be inherently be GOOD for your studies.

Taking an opportunity solely because it looks like the traditional pre-med opportunity isn't really the way to go. Like BrainBuff said, do something can display passion about.

The real question is, if you love fashion and have an alternate career path lined up, why are you trying to get into medical school?

If only about 50% of people who apply get into medical school, I think a better question is, why WOULDN'T you have an alternate career path lined up.

Being well rounded is a good thing and it doesn't preclude depth in one or two areas.

The real answer is that, YOU are probably doing too much research. Get out of your lab, and experience something else. It will make you a more successful applicant.
