As promised, below you will find the final list of presenters & their topics for the 2005 OldPreMeds Conference & Workshops. This year, the conference will be held in Washington, DC at the Sheraton Crystal City (we've obtained deeply discounted room rates - virtually half the regular rate!) from the evening of 9 June (Thursday) through 5pm on 11 June (Sat).

In addition to the speakers below, on Thursday evening we are hosting our first Head-to-Head comparison of the major MCAT prep firms. This is where representatives will be simultaneously available to speak about the services of their firm, answer questions & allow you to directly compare one vs the others. So far, we have both Kaplan & Princeton Review confirmed & are working on solidifying others.

Dr. Kathleen Chaimberg - DHMC staff anesthesiologist: Substance Abuse Detection & Prevention Among Physicians; prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Chaimberg was a substance abuse counselor.

Joe Wright, MS III - Harvard Medical School: Gunners, proms and dorms for grown-ups: learning to love your medical school classmates

Dr. Rob Cannon - UNC - Greensboro: Pitfalls and Pratfalls - Preparing a Personal Statement

Dr. Victor Freeman - President of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia: The future of Healthcare in the 21st Century

Dr. Ron Gaber - KCOM Dean of Student Affairs: Marketing Techniques For Medical School Applicants

Lori Haxton - KCOM Asst Dean of Admissions: Workshop: You are the Admissions Committee

Judy Colwell - Professional pre-med advisor: The Nuts & Bolts of Applying to Med School as a Nontraditional Applicant

Dr. Michael Adelman - WVSOM Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs: How to Survive Medical School: Strategies for Success

Dr. Pete Rauert - DHMC staff anesthesiologist, regional anesthesia fellow & nontrad success story (he was an ICU nurse for 14 years before med school!

Dr. Randy Hunt - Non-trad graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, FP physician & clinical teaching faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine: Now that I am in, where do I go now?

Dr. Adam Myers - Professor of Physiology @ Georgetown School of Med: Integration of Alternative & Complimentary Medicine into Mainstream Med School Curricula

Dr. Sue MulRoney - Professor of Physiology @ Georgetown School of Med: Post-Bacc Programs for Nontraditionals

As you can clearly see from the topic list, there will be educational elements for all levels of training from pre-med to resident. All are welcome to attend, even if you are not a nontraditional. OldPreMeds welcomes all people who desire to learn how to & about becoming a physician.

For extensive information about our conference, please feel free to drop by our website @ www.OldPreMeds.org. If you have questions for me, feel free to drop me an e-mail or send a PM through the SDN forums.

Hope to see all of you there!

I promise, it will be worth it! And, if ya need to do so, just room share. Folks do it fairly often at these conferences...as they do with lots of conferences. You can do it on our website or here on SDN - however, I would probably keep it w/i the nontraditional forum.

I hope to see all of you there. We strive to assure that our conferences are well worth the expenditure of resources & held in places that offer a lot of attraction in addition to the conference itself.

Oh...we also have finalied the Head-to-Head live comparison b/t major MCAT prep firms. Thus far, we have confirmed both Princeton Review & Kaplan & are working on others. We're also working on some free food for those who attend this session. It will be held in the hotel (Sheraton Crystal City) at 7pm in one of the conference rooms. This will be right after OldPreMeds' traditional Meet 'N' Greet to be held in the hotel's piano bar from 5pm until 7pm...and most likely resume in the piano bar immediately after the Head-to-Head session...

Oh...and after the Thursday evening Head-to-Head presentation, we're all congregating in the hotel's piano bar to meet, greet & be generally festive!

That sounds really awesome! Is anyone else from SDN attending?
I want to go and I have registered and have my hotel reservation. I will be leaving my position at work on June 20th though so I'm not sure now if I will be able to get off of work 🙁 I'm going to talk to them when I submit my letter and see what I can do about scheduling. I'm still going to request off that Thurs and Friday prior though 😀

Hey what rate did you guys get for a room?

I live in the DC area so count me in!!

By the way, I am planning on commuting back and forth - from VA to DC. This isn't going to pose any problems, is it?

Hi there,
There should be no problems unless you do too much socializing and end up getting stopped by the Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax police at a roadblock. The last conference we had in DC was off the scale in terms of networking and positive fellowship. Everyone had such a great time. We did tend to talk into the wee hours of the morning once we get good sessions going so you might find yourself napping on the sofa of my suite if you have a bit too much "spirits".

njbmd 😀

We landed $119/night versus the normal $200~$250/night there. Several folks are attempting to coordinate room sharing to further reduce the costs too.

Sounds like a blast. I can't wait.

Actually for $120 a night, I might just decide to get a room and take the socializing route. 🙂

By the way, for anyone who can't afford the $119/night or if rooms get sold out, don't be afraid to use priceline. Although you have to pick two regions of the DC area, if you pick Crystal city and a higher priced area like Dupont, you are very likely to get Crystal City. The Hyatt, which is down the road about 6-7 blocks from the Sheraton has been going for $50 a night lately, but will be a little higher in the summer time. And you might even get the sheraton. But anything you get in crystal city is within walking distance. Even if you do get something in the Cap Hill/Downtown area, you will still save big even with cab rides. It's about 8 bucks from Cap hill, or 10-12 from Downtown. Worse comes to worse, it's Metro accessible. Check out this site for the latest on priceline bids and a list of hotels in the particular regions. http://p070.ezboard.com/fpricelineandexpediabiddingwashingtondcbaltimorenovirginia

I always use priceline whenever the fam comes into town and it hasn't failed me yet.

Had not thought of Priceline - never used it myself. However, b/t that & room sharing, the conference represents only a minimal expense when compared to the value of the information that will be provided.

Feel free to respond with additional questions or observations.

Our original room block has been totally filled; however, on a space available basis, the hotel has continued to honor the deeply discounted room rate. Even if that rate no longer holds, there are the options of room sharing & staying at a nearby hotel or one near a metro station. Our conference hotel is approx 1 block from the nearest M station.

Our meeting space will hold upwards of 100 people. So, do you best to help us fill this place with nontrad pre-meds & med students!

I'm there...should be totally awesome--I can't wait to edumacate myself.

Just bumping to see who is really going! I will be there!
I will be there - arrive Thursday a.m. I cannot wait to meet all of you. This year promises to be our strongest & best conference to date!

Hi,

I'm new to SDN, just joined a week ago. I will be there. I'm 24 and plan to begin my postbac studies next summer. Hope too meet many of you there.

I am going too. It's my first time leaving my son overnight, so I may be the one you see weeping in the corner, calling her husband on the cell phone every 5 minutes. Hopefully not.

I will be there Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Hope to see everyone then!

Andrea

I just don't have the funds this year to attend.

Will some of you attendees post your experiences in DC?
