I'll be starting pod school in August at Scholl. I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the area. When I visited for my interview it seemed nice. Now I keep hearing about a high crime rate and stuff. I want to buy a house somewhere near the school, but I'm worried about the neighborhoods. Are there just bad parts of North Chicago? I know that some surrounding towns like Lake Bluff are nice, but the houses are too expensive. Can anyone offer some advice?? Thanks!

Don't buy a home near north chicago. North Chicago is not a fun place to live. My best recommendation is to speak with a reputable Realtor who knows the local market.

I have a realtor and I'm flying out in a few weeks to look around. I kind of want to narrow my search so I don't waste my time looking at houses in bad neighborhoods. I've found some houses in North Chicago and Waukegan that seemed nice, but I just keep seeing that the crime rate is high. I just wanted to hear from some people who live in the area what it's like... are there any safe areas? I'm also looking in other surrounding towns such as Gurnee. When you say it's not a fun place to live, I'm guessing that you mean it's not too safe, huh... 🙁

Hi JMUpod,

I am a graduating student from SCPM. My wife and I bought a house in Waukegan. I can tell you we were absolutely 100% pleased with our experience living in Waukegan. It took me 10-15 minutes to drive to school (6 miles). Our neighborhood is nice, convenient, and very safe. We have great neighbors. We love our home and a part of us is sad to leave.

Like any town of 100,000+, Waukegan has its sketchy areas. It is very affordable compared to most other Lake County towns. I would strongly agree with the above poster that said to stay away from North Chicago. Definitely not a place you want to buy.

We just put our house up on the market. I do not think pics are up yet, but can send you some if you wish. If you are interested, we can talk in more detail via email. I can also point you to some nice neighborhoods in Waukegan and suggest a great realtor.

Congrats on your acceptance to Scholl! I hope you enjoy your experience as much as I have.

Hey OP, so there are a bunch of nice places to live around Scholl. My husband and I also were looking for a house when we came up here last July, and ended up in an awesome neighborhood called Wildwood, which is right next to Grayslake. Depending on how far you want to commute, the area around us is awesome and I feel 100% safe living here. My average commute is 25-30mins in morning and afternoon traffic, which isn't too bad.

Other areas to check out:
-Libertyville
-Round Lake
-Gurnee
-Lake Bluff
-Grayslake/Wildwood

There is affordable housing around, but find a good realtor and go to places all over. I would suggest coming for at least 3 or 4 days to check everything out. PM me if you need more info!
