Just wondering who all is going?

Also...what exactly goes on during second look? We don't have to wear any shirts and ties again do we? Anyone know?

I'll be there!!! Well, at least, that's my plan. I got a schedule of events sent to me, didn't you receive one?? I also read somewhere that we could dress casually, although i have been concerned that i'll get there all casually dressed, and then everyone else would be in suits or something. So, if you guys could please clear that up, i'll really appreciate it.

Well I just made my travel arrangements last Friday since I got my acceptance packet Thurs afternoon. I figure I'll get a schedule of events this week then.

Whats scheduled?

We're pretty much on the same page here, i got d letter on thurs., made the arrangements on fri. I'll try to pm you the schedule, i am not sure how i'll do that but i'll give it a good try.

I wish I could meet you all at 2nd look, but I'll be presenting a poster at the Experimental Biology Meeting in San Diego that week...anyone else have this conflict?

Oh well, report back and let us know how it goes...I'll probably see you all in August

I will also be there. I am also interested in what Northwestern has scheduled.

forget shirts and ties, I grew my beard back....is that a no-no? 😀

Each of you will have a student host, and many of you will be doubled or tripled up with several students. Most medical students live downtown, but those who do not will help you with your travel arrangements. If it is not too big a hassle, please bring a sleeping bag with you. If you prefer to make your own housing arrangements, you may do so at your own expense. Many hotels in the area offer special rates for Northwestern students and guests. Unless otherwise notified, I will assume that you prefer to stay with a student host.

From O?Hare, take the blue line to Washington Street. Walk through the pedestrian tunnel to the Washington Street station and take the northbound Howard/Dan Ryan train (red line to Howard) to the Chicago Avenue station. Walk five blocks east along Chicago Avenue to Fairbanks Court.
From Midway, take the orange line to the Lake stop. Walk down to the street level and proceed several blocks to the State Street subway station. Take the stairs down to the underground station and take the northbound Howard/Dan Ryan (red line to Howard) to the Chicago Avenue station. Walk five blocks east along Chicago Avenue to Fairbanks Court.

Airport Express offers a $20 one-way rate from O?Hare to downtown and a $15 one-way rate from Midway to downtown. Visit their web site at www.airportexpress.com for more information and for a coupon for $2 off a ride.
Taxis are readily available at both O?Hare and Midway. Taxi fare from O?Hare is about $35.00 and about $30.00 from Midway.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING OR TAKING THE TRAIN:

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 312/503-1057 or
[email protected].

I look forward to seeing you in April!

Sincerely,
Hallen

Hey UCLAMAN, I'm pretty sure I met you at both the USC and Northwestern interviews. Congrats!! I, too, will be at second look weekend. Definitely to be dressed casually and just have a good time. So, if any of you also want to help me out with a decision...I'm trying to decide between Northwestern and Colorado (I'm a Colorado resident). Any opinions on that one? Thanks, fellow Wildcats (haha)!! See you April 10th!

I'm going to second look!!!

Unfortunately, I can't make it in until Thursday night, so I will miss the reception.

Everyone have fun though, and I'll see you bright and early Friday morning.

Oh yes, and I'm going to dress completely casual. Probably won't wear my "dirty jeans" (those are so passe anyway . . . 😉 but otherwise, it's up to them to impress me, not the other way around.

Hey fellow NU'ers. First of all, congrats to everyone who got the thumbs up. 🙂 Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend 2nd look weekend as I have a crew regatta but I do look forward to meeting all of you in August. Please let all of us who cannot attend know how things went. Particularly, information about housing (both university and private) would be great.

Looking forward to the fall! 😎

Yeah im pumped about second look, as I will be there. But I think I have some MSTP events to attend to (as does Neuronix). Still, there are some med events that I am looking forward to as well.

It will all be a bit blurry as I begin coming down from my 4 day high/buzz in New Orleans at THE FINAL FOUR BABY!!!

I just got tickets!!! wahooooo!!!!!! go go go go goooo marquette!!!

Hi y'all.

I've been away from the computer for a bit. I will be there as well. I think I'll bring just normal clothes with one decent outfit in case of rotations or something that requires more than jeans. Anyway, see you all on the 10th! wahoo again.

How many of you are pretty sure you'll be going to NU (besides me)?

I'm pretty sure...unless Stanford comes through. I am withdrawing my apps from all the other schools i interviewed at so NU is almost a done deal.

Yay! We're going on rotations! I really hope that's true. I got a schedule on 3/28 and it said we'd have a 3rd year student panel (booooring). So I hope the change was form panel to rotations and not the other way around.

I can't say I'm set on going to Northwestern next year. Hopefully the 2nd look weekend will help me decide.

Haven't gotten the schedule yet. Did it come by mail or email? I don't check my email very often. I did get my airline tickets though. I'm so excited to go back. It's funny...I don't need another weekend to help me decide, but hell...free weekend!

Is anyone considering living off campus? I just don't think I can live in the dorms after 4 years of living by myself in rooms larger than closets.

I'm going to live off campus. If you are in Chicago there is a free apartment magazine on certain street corners, it is really nice. Take Care. Paul

groovy. thanks!

hey guys, really excited to be visting NU again and seeing y'all. got a couple questions:

1. for those of you staying with a student host, are you bringing sleeping bags?

2. how are you guys getting from the airport to NU? taxi? i was hoping for a cheaper alternative.

3. when we get to NU, do we go straight to those lectures or do we have to check in somewhere? the lectures are before the evening reception.

Thanks for the help.

1. Fortunately my host has an inflatable bed but he is the exception. Check with your host if s/he has something. If not...you're stuck on the floor with your sleeping bag. Unless of course you just want to sleep on the bare floor.

2. The CTA(subway) goes from both midway or o'hare to chicago avenue. You will most likely have to switch lines once or twice depending on which airport you come from. Its only 1.50 tho anywhere you wanna go. Check online on the Chicago Transit Authority website for subway maps. Much cheaper than a taxi. I took the subway from midway when i interviewed.

3.Have no clue about this. I'm sure when you meet your student host s/he will fill us in. anyone else know?

thanks for the reply uclaman. unfortunately, i dont know who my student host is. how did you go about contacting him/her? i've only received an email from Hallen describing the schedule of events.

well my host is actually one of my friends from undergrad. hallen said he signed up to host for the weekend anyways. i'd imagine that whoever your student host is will email you to get in contact with you. i have no clue.

WOW. Northwestern is my DREAM SCHOOL because I'm from Chicago. The campus is awesome and right beside the lake. Do you think its hard to get into NWU medical school? I mean hard like getting into Yale or Harvard?

hmm...well...about 6000+ applicants and about 250 accepts for a class of 170. Last year's incoming class(this year's current M1's) had a avg gpa of 3.7 and 11's on each section of the mcat.

I had a great time, it was a little intimidating though, but overall it was awesome!! Did anyone look for off-campus housing while they were there? What was the most surprising thing you learned about northwestern while u were there?

I'll start-- mine was that they make you pay for everything they could possibly make you pay for .e.g, they don't provide microwave or fridges in the rooms, but they let you rent them!! I am really going to miss the free microfridge i currently have in my dorm room!!

I looked for off-campus housing that was right around the medical school. One building (Osterie?) was about $850/mo for a high rise studio with a great lake view. I was particularly impressed. I also saw McClurg, which was similarly priced and a bit further from the coast, but real close to Michigan Ave. Some of the MSTP students live in the 777 building (777 N. Michigan Ave.) which has studios ranging from $850 - $1000/mo. One of the MSTP students has a $390,000 condo. Yeah, that was sweet! But, another student had a studio condo real close to the school that was $140,000.

Hope that gives you an idea about rent. At least for me, I'm going to be looking into those apartments instead of doing the dorms. Anyone want to share a double?

Hey all. I couldn't make it to 2nd look. Does anyone have a firm grasp on what it really ends up costing to live in the dorms (after taking into account rent, renting fridge, etc...)??? I am considering looking off campus but I would like to have a better idea of what exactly it costs to live in the dorms.

Thanks

Also, Neuronix- I PMd you.

So as to the cost....I don't know if the different dorms have different cost (depending on size, lake view etc), but the girl I stayed with who said she had a smallish room, (i thought the size was fine) with a lake view, said it comes to the high $700s / month. I'm not sure if she pays for electricity or what else the variable cost is...but yes, high $700s. and of course there are no student kitchens at the end of the hallway either!

I think if I go to NWU, I'm going to live in the dorms - they said about 80% 1st years live there, and i'll just move off second year when I've made friends.

Since they provide the beds, extra chair, desk etc they do make it really easy to move in, which is nice.

If only the weather were always as beautiful as 2nd look weekend!

as far as i know residents at the lake shore dorms do not pay for electricity or water, etc. all there is is rent to pay.

someone with a lake view(not sure how big the room is) pays $720/month if i understood correctly. probably one of the smaller lake view rooms.

I was able to see three different rooms - the biggest room (with a lake view) that i saw cost around $850 and i was told that the smaller rooms were about $100 less. I think that i would be willing to shell out an extra $100 for the extra space. The room was twice as big as the other rooms

like fishface if i end up at Northwestern - i think i would stay in the lake shore dorms for the first year b/c it'll be a great way to meet people.

Hello fellow cats.

It's funny that I didn't meet any of you while I was there. I felt kind of embarassed standing up on the table yelling...'hey, sdners! Where you at?'

I had a great time while I was there. Great people, both the prospectives and the students. I got to go to a cubs game and that was way cool. There were also several people from my interview group and one from my interview panel (hello drugs, if you're reading). So it was cool to see them again. I knew before I came that I was committed to NU, now it's just more exciting.

I am one of the few who is definitely living off campus. The dorms were truly decent, but I've been out of school for 4 years and feel like I just couldn't cope with cafeteria food or a twin bed. I do worry about making friends, but it seems like that won't be much of a problem with how nice everyone is. I am applying at Onterie and several others. Trying to get one of those convertable apartments.

I hope I'll see you all there in the fall. When do y'all plan to move? I might be heading there at the beginning of august if I get housing. How I'll eat or pay for anything...that's another question.

hey guys,
i'm a uc berkeley student and i was just wondering how hard it is to get into northwestern as an out-of-state student. also, were you guys research-oriented or community service-oriented or both? and one more! how did u let northwestern know that you were really serious about attending? i know a bunch of great candidates who got into great schools that totally got snubbed by NU this year, no interview nothing! i really don't want them to think that they are just another school on a list...
thanks!
nikoo

hey nikoo, NU is a private school so it has no preference for in-staters. NU is a hard school to get into, period, and i too have several friends who got flat out dissed by them. i applied this year and got accepted. i'm a CA resident who goes to school on the east coast. i'd say my application was well-rounded and so i hit both research and service.

one of the secondary questions asks why you would want to attend NU. you can use that to explain why you want to attend. i personally thought that my answer was pretty good, and maybe that made a difference. but who knows what they really value.

one piece of advice that applies to all schools: apply early (AMCAS), and send in your secondaries ASAP. also, try to schedule the earliest interview available. this not only shows interest, but also is to your advantage since most schools are rolling. NU sends acceptances on two dates, and i was able to make the cutoff for the first date. good luck.

thanks for the insight!!!
