Hi there,

Just cannot decide! Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!

i think they are both good programs...duke may be a slight bit better?

the question is more where do you want to live...Chicago area or North Carolina...

Chicago is AWESOME but cold
Durham is drab and boring (but Chapel Hill and Raleigh are near) but the weather is better...i think it's your call in the end obviously though

Thank you, Mye Eye! Have been going through the same thought process! If only Duke was on Michigan Av🙂

yeah I'm having the problem of Duke vs Vanderbilt...

maybe be we should start tossing coins...

sorry, i don't think you know what you are talking about!

when it comes to ophtho programs, i don't believe northwestern and duke are in the same league. i think NU's program has been in some trouble in the past and while Northwestern as an institution is one of the most prestigious, the ophtho dept is one of their weaker areas. that being said, chicago is awesome. but expensive.

Duke belongs to that top tier of ophthalmology programs in the country. Yes, North Carolina is beautiful though not as exciting as Chicago. But if you're considering both, you probably do not have a strong geographic preference. And if that is the case, you should go with Duke.

i've heard similar things about northwestern from faculty at my school. program has been in a slump for some time, and they are having trouble with surgical volume - residents are sent on rotation to louisiana to boost surgical numbers. reputation-wise its not a powerhouse, not the best in chicago by any means (for ophthalmology, that is). Duke has a strong reputation (top tier) and superstar faculty in several departments (cornea, retina in particular). downside: location. do your research and choose wisely.

There is absolutely no comparison if you are looking at reputation and academics - Duke crushes Northwestern. Still, I have known Northwestern residents, and it's not like they're unprepared for jobs or poorly trained, so take that into account.

Hey ophthal 3 or anyone else,
Any thoughts on how the chicago programs rank?

UIC and Loyola, then Northwestern, Rush, and UC, then County
