I'm currently using 4.5EF loupes in the Buddy Holly frame from DFV. I love the magnification, but the weight starts killing my nose after wearing them for an hour or two, even after tightening up the strap as much as possible. Sometimes that even makes it worse because it'll force the loupes back into my nose, but any looser and they'll slide down. Does anyone have any suggestions for alterations to the frame, nosepads, etc. to reduce the discomfort? Like custom nosepads that might be larger to disperse the pressure over a greater area, or something else? I'm seriously considering switching to a head band type setup, but I'm wondering if my framed loupes could be converted to a head band setup somehow.

Have you tried laying the nose piece over your mask?

You're a dental student with 4.5x?? Hardcore.

Try going with less mag. I have the 3.5x DFV EF and that's plenty most of the time. Still heavy but they must be lighter than yours. If you need to stick with that much loupe though, you can find stick-on pads at any glasses shop/wallgreens/CVS that might help cushion the heft a little bit.

My suggestion is to either get some of the extra nose padding that the DFV reps should have to wrap around the nose support of the Buddy Holly frames or go with a sportier frame. My DFVs have the pads and are way better than without. I primarily use 4.5 Surgitels on an Oakley frame and the sport frames are great for comfort. DFV gives you like a 6 month warranty to upgrade or swap stuff out in the event you want like a Nike frame or something (though those have a whole set of issues too).

This is why I got the 2.5's despite all the talk about how great the 4.5EF is. They're just too freaking heavy. I've gotten along fine with the 2.5's.

During orientation we were heavily pressured to go with 2.5's, but after looking through them I didn't see how it would be that helpful; it just didn't seem to get me in very close. I was able to convince them to let me get 3.5EFs. I loved those, but then tried on a buddy's pair of 4.5EFs. I went from seeing the whole arch with the 3.5 EFs, to seeing a quadrant at greater mag with the 4.5s; the tradeoff seems worth it so far. I feel like I can see so much more detail on my preps which I couldn't see as easily before. The rep said they were only a few g's heavier so I didn't think I'd notice, but it's making more of a difference than I thought. The frame I have has the standard clear gel/plastic nose pads, but they just seem too small to carry the load. I loved the Nike frames, but they can't support the EF loupes, so I'm stuck with Buddy Holly. You guys have given me great suggestions though, thank you. I'll see if I can find some extra stick-on padding and then try resting the beasts on top of my mask.

nose job... I thought the buddy holly frames were possibly the most uncomfortable frames of all the brands I tried on.. but it's a face match thing.

Magnification seems to just be a personal thing. I like higher mag but others like lower. Meh.

The clear foot pads I'm talking about aren't the standard ones. They look like this:

You slide the existing plastic foot (which is hard as hell and hurts) into that one.

Well Monday and today I worked resting my loupes on my mask and that seems to be the golden ticket. Not only did it seem to cushion some of the weight, but I didn't have to fight the frame sliding down my nose so a majority of the tension was alleviated that way too. I did order some of those nose pads too, but at this point they'll probably just be the icing on the cake.

:highfive:

Buddy Holly's really are great loupes. The 3.5 expanded fields are great magnification.
