When you think of fun careers, does medicine come to mind? Although I don't expect people here to have the same experiences, did anyone ever dream about being a movie star, a pop star, or even a journalist?

Due to the extreme amount of leisure time afforded during the summer, I have been thinking about possible "fun" careers I could pursue, and medicine is very low on the totem pole.

All those years of school, missing out on taking fun classes (in college), incessantly worrying about grades--all to achieve a M.D. behind your name. When I step back to think about it, medicine isn't a fun career at all.

If I pursued a fun career, it would either be as a screen writer or an author.

What are y'all's fun careers?

I'd define "fun" career as a job I'd enjoy, which is MD. All the other jobs I've considered are basicly substitutes for MD (PA, RN etc) if I can't get in.

...missing out on taking fun classes (in college)...

Personally, I took lots of fun classes. Behavioral Neuroscience, Literature of Science Fiction, Gamelan, World Literature, Science and Religion, Advanced NMR Spectroscopy, Analytical Mechanics etc.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. If you major in what you enjoy, you'll most likely take classes that you would consider fun.

I don't think a career in medicine is not fun per se. The process to BECOME a MD/DO is not fun. Okay, I'll answer your question now 🙂. Besides medicine, I would say a magazine editor or a voice actress for an animated film and/or cartoon show.

Maybe in fantasy land. You can't honestly tell me that you've enjoyed every class that you've taken in your major. There has to be at least one class that absolutely sucked.

I never said ALL my major classes are fun. I was simply suggesting that students may enjoy classes more if they choose a major they're passionate about.

That's how we end up with tons of liberal arts, art history, English, etc majors with staggering amounts of debt and marginally marketable skills.

Financially, I'd much rather be a mediocre physician than an above average actor, author or journalist.

It's only fun if you make it fun. I've always wanted to be an artist, but doesn't mean I can't do that while being a doctor.

I think you have a warped sense of what is fun......haha

1. Medicine is fun. You ever seen Scrubs?

2. I'd go with being Iron Man for my fun job. Or I'd settle for being Robert Downey Jr.

you took a gamelan class? where was this?

i would totally have taken that. i'm a little jelly.

the first time i listened to a gamelan my thoughts were "what the f*** is all this racket?!" and then it grew on me.

amazingly cool stuff.👍

I had nearly 10 years of a "fun" career before turning to medicine. Fun is not enough to sustain a lifetime of professional fulfillment in my experience.

Rockstar 😎
TBH I'd probably choose being a musician over a doctor but one has to be realistic. 😳

Speak for yourself, I've taken bowling classes, art classes, and basketball classes when I couldn't find anything else to fit certain spots in my schedule 😀

Plus it's an extra few credits worth of A

But to you're point I've always wanted to be in law enforcement because of the intensity and excitement, not really fun but I always thought it'd be cool

I think being a test pilot or test driver for cars would be fun.

or just car reviewer in general for companies like insideline or car.com.

man great minds think alike🙂.

That sounds like a horrible job. Just horrible.

i jk, seriousely, wtf man.

I'd have to go with Peter from Office Space... I'd relax, I would sit on my ass all day. I would do nothing. That's the perfect career.

my ultimate 'fun' career would be a delivery skipper.

you get to sail all the greatest yachts, all over the world, without having to pay for them. in fact, they pay you!!

NBA player , professional poker player , hit the lotto and just become a professional partier :laugh:

Some environmental science, forestry, or conservation biology-type job would probably suit me fairly well. Anything that would allow me to spend a lot of my time outdoors. I just love hiking and being outside.

I think that the public health aspect of medicine is fun....

Besides medicine hmm...a genetic engineer who is able to create animals that resemble mythical creatures like dragons and mermaids.

Of course it's unethical and people and animals could die in the process...but let's pretend like I'm so good that no one is harmed in the process. 😀

Also a ski racer would be pretty awesome.

Musician, porn star

I never could understand why anyone would want to be a porn star. Sure sex is great and all, but exposing yourself for the world to see and having relations with complete strangers is a huge turn off, in my opinion. And I would be absolutely embarrassed, if my parents ever found out. The latter reason is sufficient enough to make being a porn star completely undesirable.

Why would you be embarrassed?

Ice cream tester.

This sounds like it would be a good job, until you think about how fat you would become. I'm on a diet/exercise regimen this summer (biked 33 miles today), so I am a little more conscious about fat at the moment, lol.

Also, I think being a marine biologist would be great too. I love water, even though I don't know how to swim 🙁

Why be healthy when you can be happy?

Hmm...porn star would be a pretty fun job in my book. Getting paid for getting laid...why wouldn't it be fun?

I like your line of thinking.

If I became a billionaire I would spend half my time doing altruistic things like paying for hospitals and giving money to the research

I guess you haven't seen Splice

Being a porn star is highly overrated. Who wants to take directions during sex? Also as a dude they want you to be able to orgasm multiple times within a short time frame meaning no time for rest because they're on the clock.

Now sleeping with a porn star OTOH 👍
