Not accepted to any 'match schools'

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I personally don't think the OP is a troll, just a d-bag... there's lots of them among premeds.

The bottom line is no matter how much you might wow an interviewer, they are still one vote on the adcom and they only have so much time to plug for you. I had multiple schools where an interviewer said I was going to get in, that he hoped I matriculated, that I was an exceptionally impressive student, etc. You know what? Waitlist or rejection at everyone of them!

This is a good point. Also, interviewers are not going to come out and say, "Sorry, I don't want you here." Although, by reading the various interviewing embarrassments on here, some are capable.

Why, when someone posts their personal stats, and they happen to be good, does this make him or her a troll? Because the OP showed a glimmer of self-esteem?

Get the pitchforks!

Seriously:

(a) Not sure Duke prefers in-staters. I think that people from NC are more likely to choose to live there. But could be wrong-- just wanted to offer an alternative explanation.

(b) I think its normal for someone with exceptional achievements to wonder why they didn't get into an exceptional school.

(c) I totally think UNC can be a safety school. Many people use state schools as their safety school-- doesn't make them evil.

<-- is also a troll, apparently.

I dont think he is a troll (and I don't think most do)--he asked why didn't he get in, and we answered. His stats/ECs were at or above avg at most of the schools, so it must be his personality b/c it seems that a lot of people with lower stats (including me) were getting into schools that rejected him..

lol, I was hoping for more people to say that they had it bad also, not more people to tell me "how this could have happened?" My "match schools were ones that had concentrations in accelerated research programs, such as Duke, Baylor, Yale, Harvard HST, Stanford. I included UPenn, JHU, Cornell, Columbia, and Vanderbilt who are known for their research but not accelerated. These are the 10 matches.

who the hell uses "match" to describe these schools? and what does that even mean? these are "reaches" for ANYONE. even though you have stats and an application that makes you competitive for these schools, there's no way of telling whom the adcoms will choose out of ALL the competitive applicants.

how did this happen? well... do you expect to win the lottery every time you play?

IMO there's so many variables, its easier just to say you were unlucky...

That said, IMO you were given bad advice...from all the people you talked to.

You have a fantastic app IMO, and honestly I'm surprised you weren't given more interview opportunities, (you have the same numbers as me) but there might of been something that the admissions saw in other peoples app that wasn't in yours.

That said getting interview invites at Duke and Baylor is already pretty intense enough👍

I mean, everywhere I went I was so humbled by everybody else, (at Stanford, I met my friend who had a first author pub and a Fulbright, his friend who had two first authors in PNAS, and my student interviewer was a fulbright)

There's so many people out there who have such awesome apps its amazing!

That said the fact you got into UNC makes u a successful applicant!

I think everyone wants to win the lottery once in their lifetime.

For everyone that gets into the schools that they wanted it becomes - "of course, you had the package that they wanted". For those that didn't, it's - "you're missing more research, or your personality sucks, or your MCAT wasn't quite high enough". It's not really fair either way. Both were probably qualified and one got in and the other didn't.

It sucks and you have to move on, but life's about luck most of the time. Christian Laettner's legacy is a lucky turn around jumper to win a National Championship. Not everyone gets to be Christian Laettner, but I'm sure a lot of people wish that play had gone another way (i.e. Kentucky fans around the world). OP obviously worked hard enough to get a fair shot at these programs, but didn't get lucky. In this metaphor, he took the shot, but didn't win the game.

I know some people wish they even had a shot, that even being in this situation is a blessing, but sometimes having that shot isn't enough. It's a difference in perspective and expectations. Going back to my basketball analogies...it's the difference between CSU Northridge going home and Wake Forest (this is best I can do...seriously, no upsets in the top 12?). One was just happy to be there, the other has to be devastated by blowing a chance to compete.

I wish people could be more supportive because OP's frustrations aren't unique and having that community of equally frustrated people might be panacea at the end of such a stressful year.
