Hey there everyone,

So I'm an undergrad from Wisconsin and will be transferring from my 2 year UW extension this spring to a 4 year UW campus.

It's a long story, but I missed the application deadline for transferring to UW-Madison, and instead plan on attending and graduating from a different UW campus.

My question is, how much will this affect my chances of getting in to UW-Madison medical school? Madison is my #1 choice for med school, but I'm afraid I'm setting myself back by finishing my undergrad anywhere but Madison.

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Wisconsin has huge IS preference and you're still within the system so...

This will have no effect upon your chances; doing well in UG does. Focus on that.

Thanks Goro, I'd heard that some med schools give preference to their own undergrads but I wasn't sure if Madison was one of them. Good to know I'll be viewed equally to the people who graduate from Madison.

UW has 42% of its acceptees coming from UW... that's higher than I thought... more like Brown territory. So, always best to have a good list of schools to apply to. MSAR Online is your friend.

Is this because UW Med favors UW undergrads or because those undergrads are really happy matriculating at UW? (Or maybe some of both).

You'll have to ask them! Demographically, you have a state with only two med schools, and a really good, big public school. So, lots of applicants... kinda like how gyngyn points out that UCLA alone can fill all the UC med schools. I don't know if WI is, as a state, a net exporter of med school applicants.

Dang, that's higher than I thought too... I definitely plan on having a decent list of schools to applying to. My stats by the time I graduate should be above average for UW, but UW is a really competitive school so anything could happen.

I'm looking to go in to rural family medicine, so I think UW's WARM program would be a good fit for me. There's also a MCW extension opening up in my neighborhood which would be my number 2 choice. I've heard it's specifically looking for applicants from the area who want to stay in the area and practice family medicine, so that would be another good fit. DO is another option I would consider, since many DO's go in to family med.

Please apply to my school!

Somewhere west of St. Louis, will do

Hey there, so I did my undergrad at UW Madison and got accepted to UWSMPH this year. While what everyone above said is true as far as UWSMPH favoring wi residents and UW undergrads, it is actually the Madison undergrads in particular that seem to be favored. Right now there are about 175 students in the accepted students fbook group and there are TONS that did undergrad at madison but only like 1 or 2 from steven's point and lacross and 4 or 5 from milwaukee compared to like 45 or 50 from Madison. The thing that i think you need to keep in mind is that the UWSMPH adcom knows how challenging the premed class are in Madison, in terms of the expectations of world renowned professors, competition among the brightest students in the state plus lots of very smart oos-ers (the schools like lacrosse and stevens point dont attract these students), the extremely high number of premeds, and also in terms of class size and how hard it is to get individual attention and help when there are 630 people in your physics class. Because of this I think that the GPA expectations are much higher of students coming out of a 4year UW school besides Madison, as compared to those coming out of madison, michigan, notre dame, ivies, etc.

That aside, work hard and knock out all the other premed requirements while keeping up that gpa and you should be fine! Also, I think the number of students that went to UW's other than Madison for undergrad is disproportionately larger in the WARM program because (with the exception of UW milwaukee I guess) you are showing the adcom that you dont mind living and learning in rural wisconsin, and you already have a community somewhere in rural wisconsin from where you did your undergrad, that you might want to go back and serve in some day! 🙂

Last year WI accepted 230/754 IS applicants (30.5%). 90 matriculated OOS (11.9%). 434 did not get in(57.6%).

Thanks for the advice everyone! @music2doc , chill dude, no one's gonna be slitting their throat or living under a bridge.

Good to know! The school I'll be transferring to I've heard isn't as challenging as the extension I go to now, which is kind of unfortunate. I really wish I would've figured out what I wanted to do before the app deadline for Madison. I hadn't thought about what you said regarding WARM and doing undergrad at a rural college though, that's a good point! It'll be interesting to see what happens when I apply. I'd love to go to UWSMPH, but if I don't get in it won't be the end of the world.

'twas a bit of sarcasm, bud. Seriously, where you go to UG essentially doesn't matter. There are far too many other factors involved to worry about that particular issue. Go excel where you got in and move on from there.

The numbers for UW seem to indicate there is actually somewhat of a preference but yea you're right. It's just something to keep in mind as I start going through the app process.

Keep in mind that Madison was the third biggest premed factory in the country last year, pumping out almost five hundred applicants. None of the other UW campuses produced even one hundred. I don't have the data so I can't confirm this, but the percentage of applicants accepted from each campus might not be all that different, even if the raw numbers are.

That's a good point, I was kind of thinking that too. My school probably has <30 students applying to medical school each year. So even though 42% of the people accepted are from UW-Madison like @Goro said, there are WAY more people applying from Madison than the other IS schools. I can appreciate what @kittykattat said though about UW adcoms appreciating the work the Madison graduates have done vs. people from other IS schools. I think though if I can bust out a 3.95 cGPA and solid MCAT like I'm hoping, my undergrad institute choice shouldn't be viewed unfavorably at least.

If you can pull off a 3.95 and a solid MCAT your school choice (deservedly) won't hold you back anywhere!

Good to know! I realize saying you'll have a 3.95 two years from now is a bold statement but I think it's doable! :xf:
