summary: group hires people and pays them a salary. group has trouble collecting money for services. group doesn't pay its employees.

is this common? and is there a way to avoid groups that do this? i'm looking for a job right now and i'd hate to be in a situation like this.

make sure you have an iron-clad contract. hire a contract lawyer and go over your concerns (and the contract), and make them re-write it until it's to your satisfaction. if you don't have unreasonable demands, then it should be fine. if your reasonable requests are deemed unreasonable, screw 'em and walk away.
