I understand the 2010 application cycle is coming to a close, and although I have been successful with some schools, I have yet to hear any word from a few others. I'm not sure if this is a silent rejection or what-not, but I am wondering if it is a good idea if I call these schools to see what the heck is going on. I know I am not the only person in this boat. But is calling the schools worth a shot?

Same Boat:

Applied: 14
And 8 schools have must been to busy to even reject me because I have not heard a word from them.

have you called to check your app status? Even some places with status pages will tell you a little more info over the phone like when you'll be re-reviewed etc.
Also, timelines vary from school to school. Ex) not hearing before January wasn't a good sign a UMich but at Loyola they don't re-review files until after Jan first and they interview into April. So it might be a good idea to find out from the schools what their time lines are.

I'm in the same boat. I just assume it means my rejection letter will be in a big batch at some point, but I've heard of people getting lucky late in the cycle, so who knows?

I'm also in the same boat. I've just assumed rejection from the schools I haven't heard from yet.

You can still call to ask, you know, like remind them you're still on Earth.

We pay more than a hundred bucks to each school and I think we deserve more than the treatment like that.

Be a grown up and call them. Otherwise wait until the cycle is completely over before complaining. There is always some file that gets lost or some file that accidentally gets skipped when they update status pages but in general schools will let you know eventually. It just may not be as soon as you would like unless you take some initiative.

If I paid a school $100 I wouldn't just let them have it. I'd be callin them up periodically which is exactly what I've done at schools without status updates

I applied to ~25 schools last year, and even now (half way though MS1 year) I haven't heard from 10 of them. I just assumed it was a rejection, and never really thought about it. I was successful at a few schools and by this time last year, I didn't really care about other schools. I actually got a couple of letters (UC Davis and one other) at the beginning of this school year saying they were sorry they couldn't extend me an invitation for the c/o '13 - yeah, I kinda figured that out a long time ago! 😛
If you really want to know, then call them, but the person on the other side probably won't know or will just tell you you're not getting an interview invite.

Imagine if they called you right now, offering you an acceptance to their class.

Agreed. Which is why Michigan deserves such kudos for how they do it.

i just figured schools do it like that to keep their options open . . . like if for some reason less students accept seats there than they expected, they need to be able to pull a few more. (still though i think they could reject at least half the people still waiting.)

i'm still waiting to hear from 7 schools. i think all you can really do, aside from calling, is peruse the school specific threads to figure out whether schools are still extending interviews. some are. like i know loyola interviews late. on the other hand i also heard, from the school specific thread, that tulane's class is pretty much filled. so i know i might still be under consideration at one school and probably not at another.

still though it would be nice to have the rejections just for closure so i can move ahead and make plans with my current acceptances.

is there any sort of firm date when all schools stop interviewing and we can assume rejection? may 15? do all acceptances after that pretty much come from waitlists?

Yup. They give auto-invite, they are fast as hell on interview and final decision, and they keep you updated after the acceptance. Even school should be like that.

Interview pretty much stop @ mid-march.

"is peruse the school specific threads to figure out whether schools are still extending interviews"

+1

It completely depends on the school at this point. Some seem to be done and no news = rejection. Others, (USC and Stanford come to mind) interview very few people each day and interview through april, so theres still plenty of time. Though I agree that for $100 they could at least send a 1 line rejection email like I got from northwestern today.

Its crazy when you think about it, some schools make over a million bucks on applications alone. Obviously there are expenses (admin staff, interview lunches, etc.) but most admissions comittees are volunteer. Must be a big moneymaker for some schools.

Oh, I did do that. I called them all at the beginning of January, as schools began to open again after the holidays. All I got was, "You are still under review" (or some variant of that). And I've sent update letters to all the schools too. I've definitely done my part to make them aware of my existence.

We should make a list of silent-rejection schools and then encourage the fellow sdners not to apply to those schools. 😉

My only problem with them is their second look weekend. I had always imagined it was a chance for all accepted applicants to see the school and meet one another, but they set up an immediate and visible hierarchy of the students by sending out the emails for the weekend in timed batches, such that by the last couple of batches there are no spots left for the weekend...lets you know how much they wanted you in comparison to the next guy.

We're getting into silent rejection season. It doesn't hurt to contact the schools and to show interest with a letter, but the longer it goes without any word, the more likely it is that you're not going to be offered an interview.

Yeah, I agree. I think it should be common courtesy to at least notify the applicants you reject.

I haven't heard from like 7, but I applied to too many schools. One or two I'm pretty interested in, and am in the process of sending letters of interest. It's probably too late, but I figure it doesn't hurt to try.

It's probably safe to assume rejection at most of these places. That way if you get any more interviews it will be a nice surprise.

Stupid silent rejections. I've emailed most schools and am told I'm still 'under active consideration".... blah
