My professor said that I won't be to get into medical school, no matter how hard I try because im not in the top 1% percentile. Just wondering how accurate that is...

Not accurate, that professor is a bit of a dick. Sure, you gotta have good GPA and MCAT, but plenty of people who aren't absolutely perfect manage to get in somewhere.

Let's look at the stats.... there are ~20,000 admitted per year out of ~1.9 million college graduates per year. We can figure that the number that are admitted several years after graduation averages out with this year's graduates who will be admitted years from now.

That does work out to the top 1.05% of all college graduates. Fortunately, not all college graduates apply to medical school. You do need to be in the top ~40% of applicants to med school to get a spot. There is a correlation between MCAT/GPA and likelihood of admission. Work hard and don't let the bastards get you down.

In the opinion of someone you didn’t ask for the opinion of, I would have to say that only 1/3 of applicants are qualified stats-wise because only 1/3 of applicants are 3.6/508 plus, thankfully premeds aren’t in charge of admissions and we are more than just stats, so now I will end my unqualified opinion.

On a serious note, if you are a 500+ MCAT AAMC thinks you can succeed in med school.

Haha thanks! I based it off of stats only cause its hard to base qualifications off from ECs which are very subjective. So 1/3 of the 50,000?

The median GPA for MD acceptees is 3.71. For DO, about 3.4-3.5.

Based upon apps from my own school, and input from other Adcoms here on SDN, I'd say that 10-50% of apps come from people who have no business ever setting foot on a medical school campus, except as standardized patients.

You only need to be in the top 20% to have a 50% chance of getting into medical school.

But in all seriousness to OP, everyone knows at least one professor who says stuff like that. You have a choice in who you listen to and who you let mentor you. And if they all fail you, then there are plenty of tools and metrics out there (other threads, LM, WARS, and spreadsheets - see below) to help you decide if you are competitive enough. 👍
