I recently registered for next semester and omg I can't believe I did this to myself! I will be taking Genetics + lab, Animal Nutrition (online through Purdue), and sitting back in on my Comparative Animal Physiology class (professor is letting me in to retake the class to raise my C+ to a B or A). If I raise this grade, I'll only have one C (which will be Biochem) on my transcript which makes me feel better. (So if I don't get accepted this time, my transcript will be even better next cycle). This is how it has panned out because I have already turned in my application so all of this has to be finished by June. I hope I don't encounter any other hiccups next semester. On top of all of this, I am freaking over my Biochem class right now. I bombed the first test and with there only being one other test and cum final (which is next week); I might come out of this with a C. So I'm not feeling confident right now🙁
On another note, my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I was thinking about a stethoscope. I know Littmann is a good brand, anyone else have any ideas? (my interest is LA) I need one to carry in my trailer and keep in the barn anyways. Thanks!!

I don't know much about stethoscopes but if it makes you feel any better, I am also hoping to come out of biochem with a C. My schedule for next semester looks something like: Genetics + Lab, Physics 2 + Lab, Molecular Biology + Lab, Zoology Lab, Organic 2 Lab. You can do it!!! I hope that I can too
 
my schedule is similar - biochem 2, phys 2 & lab, genetics, animal nutrition, and upper level bio course for research trip. not gonna be a fun semester!!! as for stethoscopes, i am LA and have a littman master classic II. it's available in a longer tube that may be beneficial for some LA cases but mine is just the regular length and i haven't had any issues. i really like mine. 🙂
 
I'm being somewhat "lazy" next semester, for my last semester of my senior year. NO LABS FINALLY! My only two science classes will be behavioral ecology (this will be a toughie though, because it is a graduate seminar course), and my independent research... which I guess counts as a lab but eh, no weekly pre/post labs to hand in thank goodness. Other than that, I'm overloading in more "fun" classes (Arabic, drawing, music composition, etc), which will take up a lot of my time, but I have really missed expressing my artistic side; the last 3 1/2 years have been crammed with labs so I have had zero time to pursue that entire other half of my being, ugh!

I hope it doesn't hurt me in the end, and that vet school doesn't get annoyed and question me about not taking a heavier science load for my last semester after they look at my transcripts... I mean, I will still have completed a double major (psychology and biology) so maybe it will be ok haha. I've wanted to take these courses throughout my whole college career but haven't had the opportunity to until now... maybe I can spin it into a positive and help me stand out in my application, who knows. Can anyone else relate?

Ah me too me too!! I'm only taking one lab course next semester because I've had at least three lab courses for the past five semesters...I feel like such a slacker!! But I have REALLY missed music/art...and I figure if the four+ years I spend in vet school (however long it takes to get in) are going to be solely science, I should get that stuff in now while I can 😀
 
Boo Winter Quarter!! I am not looking forward to it and tried to make it light but it didn't exactly work out. Virology with lab (2x a week), Zoo phys w/ lab (again w/ the twice a week), marine bio (hybrid), and "scientific communication" which I have heard is somewhat fluff...

Yay for us all having crazy next terms!

ETA: TheEvilShoe, I am super jealous that your school offers Arabic. I tried to teach myself once and all I remember is the word for brown.

Aw... I think my school offers 4 semesters worth or something. It's a very large school though, which I guess explains the availability of the course? My boyfriend speaks Arabic fluently, so he'll be able to help me with anything if I have issues 😀
 
To OP: You can do it!! It is not impossible.

I took senior year super easy. 12 credits this semester and 13 next (after taking 18-19 credits previous semesters hopefully the vets schools won’t see this as “lazy”; I am just giving myself a small reward for working so hard.). Next semester I am taking the second semester of Human Anatomy/Physiology and the Lab (already took Animal Phys), Infectious Diseases, Intro to Psychology and Extreme Weather: Cyclones, Tornadoes and Floods.
 
I will find out what I made on my Biochem test for enzyme kinetics tomorrow (not my cup of tea😡). This will determine if I can pull off a C, then it is on to the cumulative final next week. What is frustrating is that I have a 92 in lab and it is not showing that I know the material in class. His tests are fill in the blank, T/F where you have to explain why it is false, and short answer. My stomach is in knots right now.

I looked on eBay and found ~550 Littmann’s. I liked the Littmann II and I called the LA vet I work for and he said he prefers the Littmann. I saw one for cardiology which was about $50-70 more than the regular one.

Ah, so you must be in Biochem 1. It does not get any easier in 2, just a heads up. So weird that we go to the same school. Anyway, when do you have Genetics next semester, maybe we'll be in the same class (I too have heard horror stories about it), we can be study buddies. Oh and I heard that you guys got the phospholipid dance on Thursday. That was quite possibly the best class period of my entire college career.

What is this awesome phospholipid dance you guys speak of? My biochem lecture is more just dronedronedrone. And then I fall asleep and struggle to find someone to get the remainder of the notes from after not being able to stay awake for a 2 hour lecture at 8am on Mondays! Ew.

Is Genetics a terror everywhere? It's apparently horrible at my school too and I am avoiding taking it haha. The school(s) I am interested in don't require a greater understanding of genetics than I have already achieved through other biology classes.

I must be coming across as a big under-achiever, but that's okay. I'm going to enjoy my last semester at school... and if vet schools don't like it then I guess I'll have to take any extra classes the Spring semester before matriculation 😛

Genetics was actually one of my better classes-- I had an absolutely wonderful professor who not only taught it well, but he made it interesting and entertaining as well. It was required for me to graduate, but all in all, i was glad I took it. I waited until this professor would be teaching it though!
 
My schedule isn't too horrible compared to all of yours, but it's my first quarter back in the "hard sciences", so it'll be a bit of an adjustment for me. Human Anat and Phys 1, Bio for majors 1, Genchem1, and French1. So 20 CC credits, which equates to...maybe 15 semester credits? Iunno. All three of the first have labs, so I'll be hopping, though I think only the chem lab requires any sort of write-up. I'll definitely be grouping up the harder sciences, so we'll see my opinion a year from now, lol! :laugh:

I'm going to pull this from my lecture notes about the phospholipid dance....Our male professor is on the feminine side just to give you an idea. Last week we went over phospholipids and what they exhibited: lateral diffusion, transverse diffusion (lipid flip-flop), fast axial rotation, and fatty acid "flailing". So he rotated, flailed, and "danced" across the lecture hall to give us a visual. The only thing he couldn't do was the flip-flop (he said he might break his hip if he did :laugh: ). Apparently it's a popular topic and a memorable one for people who have taken this class
 
i'll be taking the 2nd half of o-chem (+ lab), microbiology (+ lab), and my thesis (looking at alcohol consumption in non-human primates). it's my senior year, but i'm not applying until next fall, and am behind on finishing pre-reqs, so no time to take it easy. i was thinking about taking genetics, but am worried i won't have enough time for my thesis. so i think i'm going to do genetics online during the summer or next fall.
i kind of wish i were taking more science courses and not doing a thesis, but it's required, and my college kind of makes thesis into the be-all-end-all of your 2nd semester senior life :-(.

i'm in the same boat...on the first test I got a high B, but that was with a different professor b/c halfway through the course the profs switch -- hate that! good luck to you AUhopeful, i hope you did well on the enzyme kinetics exam! it's gonna be a busy 2 weeks for those of us preparing for a cumulative biochem final :scared:

I wish everyone the best. :luck::xf:I will be retaking Biochem next semester, here's to 13 credit hours of upper division science courses (during the last semester while I wait for my letter and work almost full time):beat: I was not planning on repeating Biochem and rearranging my whole semester. Not cool. But I'm going to suck it up and do my very best to prove to the admissions committee that I can handle it. My husband is going to forget he has a wife because the library will be my home for 4 months.....

Animal Nutrition (online) 3hrs
Microbiology + lab 4hrs
Biochemistry (keeping lab grade of A) 3hrs
Comparative Animal Physiology (keeping lab grade of B) 3hrs

I only need 3 classes next semester to graduate. Biochem, organic lab and animal physiology. Unfortunately, that only adds up to 8 credit hours, and I need 12 for financial aid. I thought it wouldn't be a problem to take some "fun" classes to bump me up to that magic 12 credit hour mark, but apparently all the fun classes I want to take (astronomy, intro to human origins, geomorphology) are all at the same times as the three classes I have to take.
 
Do you go to undergrad at Auburn? If so, you should just take animal nutrition at the school. Chiba is a joke of a teacher

Wow, I feel like a slacker now for my schedule next semester. I'm taking gen chem 2, mammalogy (w/ lab, and I've heard horror stories about the prof), and two gen eds (my school requires us to take an obscene amount of gen eds). Although I couldn't really help having a slacker schedule. I'm in gen chem 1 right now, so I need to take gen chem 2 next semester so I don't forget it. And all the other science classes I need to take either interfered with chem or each other so I could only take one 🙁.

As for genetics-I took it over the summer in 5 weeks (I go to a semester school, so I'm used to 15 week terms so it was a lot of material in not a short amount of time to take in) and it definitely challenged me, but the class was awesome and not impossibly difficult.
 
Luplodw: I think you are refering to me? I would love to be at Auburn taking these prereq courses but I am still living way, way down south in Alabama (by the gulf). I drive across the state line into Florida and go to UWF (I get in state tuition there with a little added on to each hour, like $25 or something close to that).

Since I already have a Bachelor's degree, I am just taking the required courses for admission. It wasn't my plan for this last semester to end up like this, but I screwed up Biochem and I have to fix it. I am really nervous about what the admissions committee will say or think; they might not even give me a chance because of it. I have to send Fall transcripts regardless so they will see a D (my first one ever in my school career🙁). My college does one grade forgiveness for students so I will end up repeating the class and the new/better grade will be put in place of the other as if it didn't happen. sighh...

Oh No!!! Are you sure you're going to end up with a D? You still have the final and don't forget the attendance "test grade" that I think he's doing for your class too. We didn't get back our tests yet but I'm really nervous about getting it back. We don't get to be genetics buddies now 🙁. If it makes you feel any better, I have a not so pretty grade on my transcript (when I tried to work waaaay too much while going to school full-time at the same time), too but I've worked really hard to do well since then while still working when I can.

Oh, and I wanted to ask you if the large animal vet you work with needs any help or would consider having someone shadow on the weekends or over christmas break. I'd really like to get some more large animal experience. Let me know!

My next semester is finishing up my English and Spanish majors (oh hey non-trad application) and then starting Biology and Primate Behavior! I'm taking my first science since "Great Ideas in Physics" of freshman year. Should be interesting...

· I know it sucks! But Genetics lab and Biochem lecture run at the same time and I HAVE to have Biochem. I will sub Microbiology or Cell for Auburn's elective requirement. This is going to be one of the hardest semesters I have ever taken! I did 19 hrs at my community college for three semesters when I first started and I would almost rather do that over again:laugh:
· The LA vet I work for is good about allowing people to shadow. The clinic isn't open on the weekends; it's just mucking stalls, feeding, changing bandages, and administrating meds (sometimes there isn't anything up there). The occasional emergency comes in but I recommend coming in during the week. With breeding season coming up, he'll do a lot of ultrasounds on mares and maybe a stallion collection or two so that might be worth coming over on a weekend. I think starting pretty soon, one Friday a month, Dr. Waguespack (assistant professor/surgeon at Auburn's LA Teaching Hospital) will be coming in to do surgery. I've had the pleasure of assisting during two of his surgeries when he came down a while back. Priceless!!😀 I'll let you know when they set up a day for him.

I was looking forward to working/volunteering more hours at the equine clinic but that's not going to happen. Here's to no sleep! 😴

Myotis - I'm taking mammalogy at my school right now, and i kept giggling 'cause our mammalogy prof has his own umm... reputation.

I love everything we're learning about, but the lab is evil. (I'm assuming almost all mammalogy labs are the same.) I flat out suck at differentiating between the skulls. Our last test had 53 species on it, and it was terrible. I can get the skulls down to genus, but then when it comes down the the species, I keep getting it wrong. And I cannot get motivated to do better, 'cause when in life am I going to have to sort chipmunk vole and mouse skulls by species with no dichotomous key?
 
Next semester will be fun with genetics (just lecture, the prof prefers that we take lab and lec in separate semesters), physics II, Bio-Organic Chem (the pre-req for Biochem instead of two semesters of O-Chem), some wonderful class about world art and another gen ed. Overall, it is 18 credits... I would rather take 5 science classes than any gen eds, but unfortunately that's not possible.

It looks like there are lots of people taking genetics semester - we could start an SDN study group...

I'm taking mammalogy too......I couldn't for the life of me identify those stupid rodent skulls on my lab practical. Grrrrr!! They all look exactly the same especially when you can't line them up together to compare them. I take the final this week and I am sooo relieved!
 
Next semester is one I some what dread. NO science classes at all. It's just purely business courses.

An MBA is easy but it sure is boring.

May take a Botany class though so I can take the biology GRE and apply to OK if need be for next cycle.

Our Genetics wasn't too bad. The TA was pretty good and explained everything well. Problem is the professor would ask fairly easy questions as well as moderately hard ones, but every test would throw in 3 or 4 completely obscure questions that were meant to "separate the A's from the B's" but even my friend (who did graduate with a perfect 4.0) only got two of them at best every time. The correct completion on those questions, for the entire class, was about 4%.
 
I cant wait for next semester mainly because I will be done with ecology!!!
So my classes are Organic II, A&PII, Cell Bio, Ethics of Harry Potter ( I kno I kno gen ed stuff) and Intro to Art (gen ed). I really like organic so I cant wait for more of it!!!!!!
 
HopefulAg, ouch. That kind of semester would make me positively stabby.

I enjoyed Genetics. I took it with a brilliant, eccentric Briton with a dry sense of humor, so lecture was never boring, and it was pretty exciting to learn about some of the latest research on bizarre things like epigenetics.
 
Ugh, next semester I have OChem (+lab), Biochem, Nutrition, Genetics, and Personal Financial Planning.

The Finance is my "fun" class.... Isn't that sad?
 
I'm graduating in two weeks! This semester is pretty easy, just some lib ed requirements and Biochem. Last year was hell though, second semester I had:
Genetics, Organic Chem 2 with lab, Vertebrate Physiology, Business Management, and an internship.

I'm taking Physics I, Animal Nutrition, Ecology and an honors course that is basically a big research project. I'm also TAing (and doing a big research project on that. x_x) and taking two ethics courses. I'm going to be pretty busy, but everything (excluding Ecology) sounds really fun. 🙂

Ha, there seem to be a few ecology haters in the thread. I'm taking it now for my minor and it is mind numbingly dull. Easy, but so damn boring.

Plus, I got a research job doing DNA analysis on whelk. I can't wait 😀 I'll also be volunteering once a week at the shelter, bowling once a week, and if I can handle it, keeping my old job at a fast food restaurant and working one shift a week.

Now that I have this all written out, I think my fast food job will have to go 🙁

I'm kinda envious of you guys... you all seem to have these really cool courses like Animal Nutrition and Animal Physiology... stuff like that. I go to a small university. The closest courses we have to stuff like that is Chordate and Biomechanics (can't wait to do that next year... you get to dissect a cat limb!)

We apparently have this Religion and Film class where you get to watch movies like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and analyze the religous aspects of it 😛

That reminds me of a class on my campus. It's Psychology of Leadership, but you get to write a paper analyzing the leadership examples in whatever movie you want. One of my friends was looking into writing his on something like TMNT or Power Rangers.
