Hi

I am hoping/prey to get a pathology spot from scramble. I know that every year, there a few spots available for scramble. I am a US med student with extensive research experience during undergrad and post undergrad (NIH experience) with couple publications / abstracts (but not in pathology, mostly molecular biology). Would you say those spots are difficult to get during scramble? How much usmle scores matter?

In case, I dont get a spot, I am hoping to get some suggestions / advice. Is post sophomore pathology fellowship feasible, despite I am a current 4th year med student.

Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Why are you scrambling? Did you to apply to some other specialty and decide on path too late to apply this year? Or, did you apply to path and not get very many interviews?

Unless there are red flags you are not telling us about, you shouldn't have much trouble getting an open spot. But you will probably have to be flexible as to location and program. Your resume that you posted here looks good though, you could also take a year off and do more research and apply for real.

Hi

Thanks for the advice. Well, I am currently applying for something else, but I have a feeling I will not match. For one, I submitted my application really late, which pretty much eliminated me from many interviews. My board scores are not great. I have always wanted to or interested in pathology, but my family / friends tried to convince me not to apply for pathology.

There seem to be few spots available at good path programs. Are there difficult to get?

How did your family/friends convince you not to apply to path? Do I read your post correctly by understanding that you are now applying for path because you don't think you will match in the field you really want?

I hope that family / friends don't like pathology or that you really wanted another specialty isn't what you will tell PDs in the scramble.

Listen, you really sound all over the place. You posted this less than a week ago....

Hello

i was wondering if I can get some feedback or advice from anyone on this thread regarding matching to anesthesia. i am current 4th year US med student and going through matching process. i came to a late conclusion that i want to pursue anesthesia for many reasons and not sure if this is feasible idea? After deep reflection, I realized that i wont be happy with my previous choice.

what are the minimum usmle scores to get a spot in anesthesia ?
is it impossible to get a spot via scramble?
in case no success in getting a spot in anesthesia this year, what would be the best route? research ? preliminary medicine, then reapply?
if no match, which is better preliminary med or preliminary surgery?

thanks

So, do you want to do pathology or anesthesiology? After some light perusing on your earlier posts, it seems that you were torn between the two back in fall of last year. Judging by the fact that you were seemingly very interested in scrambling for gas less than a week ago, I'd strongly recommend you to scramble into a prelim or transitional spot... Something that would give you more exposure to the two fields. I think if you jumped the gun right now during the scramble, you might be very unhappy with your decision down the road and be more likely to jump into another residency which will just cause you undue heartache.

Are you simply choosing pathology because you view it as less competitive, but anesthesia is where you're heart is set? If so, then perhaps you should do a prelim year, and reapply on time for next years match which might give you more invites which is what seemingly instigated most of your anxiety with this years match. Just do what makes you happy and if it takes an additional year then so be it.

Wow, the OP was busted on the gas ninja'ing.
