I am a Canadian student and so was unaware of submitting primaries ASAP
Any one ever submit late eg by Sept 1 and still get replies?
Getting slightly worried now 🙁

I'm not sure of Canadian schools, so focusing on US ones.

I would say it would be tougher as a Canadian. Unless you are an amazing applicant (3.95±, 520±, cured cancer, etc). There have been people get in late, but they were amazing applicants, and would likely of had far more accepts if they applied earlier. I believe all the ones I have heard of were American.

Thanks for the advice will def not apply to as many as I was going to!
So if I was to apply to maybe 2-3 schools as a backup- do you have any you'd recommend?

I wouldn’t apply to any so that you’re not considered a reapplicant there if it doesn’t work out. But you’d want to pick a school that fits your stats, or is slightly below them. However, do you really want to go to a school next year that was your “backup” or would you rather wait and strengthen your application to apply first thing next cycle and try to attend your dream school?

I can't recommend applying now, unless you are a mega-superstar.

The DO cycle is longer, and so you're fine fo DO.
