Hello,

Here is my situation. I am a 4th year student graduating in a few weeks. Right now I have an overall GPA of 3.16 with a science GPA of 3.05. Just wondering, I will be taking Organic Chem 2 from June 2 to June 25 and a first year Physiology course as well. Should I wait till I finish this course up (organic) before applying since it is a pre-req? Or should I apply this month before taking the course. I had taken Organic Chem 1 last summer but didn't take the second half because the prof had to leave for personal reasons and a graduate student was going to teach the course. Not sure what I should do....oh and my DAT scores are 20/20/15. Any advice would be great! Thanks.

I would apply as soon as possible. All they care about is if you have completed the prereqs before you matriculate. I didn't take my physics classes and my O-chem lab until after I had already applied. So I would apply on the first possible week. good luck to you.

apply early. on the application it has a section for courses intending to take; just list those courses there

Thanks for the quick responses! The only thing I am worried about is applying with a low GPA AND a low PAT score (15). My first two years were terrible but my 3rd and 4th were pretty good (3.8). In my second year I received low marks in Cell Bio (D), Genetics (C-), and Biochem (C+) 2nd year level courses (TERRIBLE). On the contrary I took Histology (B+), Pharmacology (A-), and Neuroanatomy (A-) and Microbial Ecology (A) and did decent in these courses (3rd year level). I am planning on taking Advanced Cell Bio and Advanced Genetics and an upper level Biochem next year. I am just not sure if I should even apply this cycle or just wait. Its quite an investment just in applying but I do really want to be a dentist and have about 30 hours shadowing. Any input would be great, is anyone else thinking/feeling the same way?

Your GPA is better than 3.00 and that's the cutoff for many schools. The only thing is the PAT of 15. Some school cutoffs are 17 on all areas.
Some schools want all prereqs complete before applying, some don't care.

Where are you planning to apply, and what was yout soap carving score ?(just curious)

Hi *Tooth*fairy*,
I was going to apply to the private schools. BU, NYU, Temple, Tufts, and Case. I have heard that BU and NYU are easier to get into but not sure if my stats are good enough for these schools. Have people with PAT score of 15 gotten into these, or any schools? My carving score was 8 so thats not great either. I was planning to apply to US schools anyways so I didn't spend much time on it.

Apply early, and see how it works out. Waiting won't help anything, but if you don't get in, you know what you need to improve for the next year. PAT and GPA.

I got into tufts and Case with a PAT of 16. They didn't even care. I also got an interview from BU but I didn't go. I didn't apply to temple. So I don't think that you will have a problem and if you apply early you wil most likely get into most of those schools.

I'm sure people with a PAT of 15 have gotten in somewhere, and many schools don't care about soap, (except UBC 😡 )

Here is my advice: apply everywhere, that's what I'm doing. Word is that private schools are easy and anyone gets in, but that isn't true, at least from my experience reading this forum. Sometimes they just reject people with good stats. Apply to Detroit Mercy as well, they are also a "Canadian-freindly" school.

I would be surprised if you didn't get in at least somewhere...

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I am seriously considering taking Organic Chem 2 during the winter session of next year. I don't think that I can handle Physiology and Organic Chem at the same time at an accelerated pace. I have heard though that some schools weight marks in Organic Chemistry moreso than other courses because these are more difficult courses. Just want to know am I at any disadvantage in taking Organic Chem 2 next year? Also, this is completely different question, but does anyone know if we send out LOR's ourselves, besides getting the prof to sign the seal of the envelope, is anything else required before sending them out? Still have to use the matching forms? Thanks!!
