I am very grateful to have received 3 interviews this cycle (2 wait lists, 1 decision pending), and I don't want to "jinx" myself in any way by questioning my good fortune, but I can't help but think that my situation is evidence that this process is really a crap shoot. I always find myself looking at random people's Mdapps just to see how I measure up. For example, look at this person (random profile, sorry if this is you!) http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=15909 and look at my stats. I really just don't know what to make of it, why do people who have stellar numbers and ECs get brushed off like that? I can assure you that my PS is nothing remarkable... what gives?

Sorry for my neuroticism, I'm going crazy waiting and I have too much time to over analyze this stuff. 😕

I don't get it. Do you feel like you measure up and should have an acceptance at this point? Or are you thankful for the waitlists? What's going on?

If your personal statement is average or weak, that could be hurting you. Other possibilities are weak letters of recommendation or a weak interview and lateness of your application. It's tough to say which singular thing is affecting your chances at admission.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am EXTREMELY grateful for any and all love that I have received, but wondering how it happened given that there are people out there with better stats who have received fewer interviews.

Oh, well then my statement above still applies. It's not all about stats. It depends on his/her personal statement, secondary essays, letters of recommendation, interview, and timeliness of application as well.

How did someone like me (9/10/12/R, 3.86 GPA, degree from a crappy state school) get an interview at Columbia when others with much higher MCATs and better GPAs didn't?

Luck does play a part in the admissions process. Perhaps there was something in your file that stuck out to your file reviewer. Maybe you had stellar LORs. One thing is certain - stats aren't everything, although amazing stats will definitely help.

Best of luck to you! :luck:

There is absolutely no question that this is a crap shoot.

However, I have come to believe that there is quite a bit of politics behind this process as well. You never know who a person might know at a school. It is possible that someone knows the Dean of Admissions are Harvard, and so they can get in with a 27. There is so much cloak and dagger in this process that it is unlikely that anyone can actually give or get a straight answer about how it all works.

I wish you the best of luck ABR. Hopefully you will hear good news soon!

That person is also from CA apparently...it explains alot.

Dude you didn't get in anywhere yet. Recount your good fortunes later please.

i can end this thread easily with one statement....

the OP is from mizzo and received 2 instate interviews with a 28 MCAT,

the random mdapplicant from CA with a 33 MCAT, received only 2 interviews because he/she is from CALIFORNIA!!!!

I empathize with the TS. The random MdApps is from CA but he does have 3.7/33 MCAT/applied on time/applied broadly... but did not get in anywhere yet. Should we expect above average apps to be doomed just b/c you are from CA?

Also, MdApps have a bunch of ~3.7/>30 MCAT people that barely get in (e.g. accepted to 1 school after waitlist). Many seem to comment that their LOR/PS also seem to be strong. Ruling out the usual (bad LOR/PS/bad interview/untimely app/few schools), what seems to be preventing some good applications from gaining acceptance? Or can we really pinpoint precisely what should these people have done differently?

Don't overanalyze. Join the club of qualified applicants who've gotten no love. You have plenty of company.

Totally agree with you. No word yet here either. 🙄

Kudos to you for seeing the glass half full instead of half empty! You have a lot to be grateful for...not getting an acceptance is not the end of the world. Chill, relax, and be patient. Things will fall into place when you least expect it....😎

someone is gonna drop the URM bomb any second 5,4,3....

Yup, it's a crap shoot. My first time through the ringer, I got one interview, no acceptances. I applied really late, so I figured that was the main reason. My second time through, the first interview I got was from Harvard - after submitting the secondary 3 hours or so before the deadline. Go figure.

I would plan on not getting in off the waitlist. Start applying to masters program, maybe gain your emt-b, get a research position, clinical job, etc...And get those apps. in early next year. Also, add MCW to your list of schools. It doesn't sound like you have a lot of research experience so I'd take off emory, wash u, schools like that. A lot of schools even let you forward previous years letters to your current application. Just call the admissions department. That way you can get your applications done by the end of June. Also apply DO.

A 4.0/45 means nothing if you have a 0.0 personality. There are plenty of people with great stats that don't get in b/c they don't present themselves well or b/c they don't possess great people skills.
