I have the online edition to US News and they report the following:

Three-year average (2003, 2004, and 2005) of graduates entering primary-care specialties (family practice, general pediatrics, general internal medicine): 77.0%

Now is this due to the fact that most students who go to NSU want to become primary-care physicians or is it because that's what the school "direct's" you to go.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.👍

I'm not 100% sure, but if you look at how many specialized residencies they offer at NSU, I think its mostly the first.

I think the reason the statistic shows this is that I believe that they consider anyone who goes into a traditional rotating internship to be going into primary care. This throws off the statistic a lot because of the fact that FL is one of those magic states that has in the past (changing in 2008/9) that has required a rotating internship for licensure.

I don't feel forced into primary care really at all.

hey kaikai...quick question.. i forgot if its NSU or not who waive your 3rd yr and 4th yr tuition if u promise to do a one yr DO internship or something like that?? and if not NSU...do u know which school does that??? i know its one of the schools im applying to..but now i'm mixing things up..lol..thanks

It is NSU that does that....theres also a Research fellowship at NSU that also waives 3rd/4th year tuition...as well as the OMM fellowship

Do you have to be in a certain field of study?? Do you know a way to find more info about that??

First off, you wouldn't even consider/apply for this until midway through your second year. second, I believe the research is not necessarily geared towards OMM. I believe the OMM fellows do their own research and the separate research fellowship is more hardcore science research.

Are you saying that if we do an AOA Traditional Rotating Internship upon graduation, our third and fourth year tuition is waived? Wow.

No No No No No!

There is an opportunity for students to take a year off between their SECOND and THIRD year of medical school. This 'year off' would be to do one of two things. 1. Be an OPP fellow and work at the school's OPP department and help teach OPP to first and second years. 2. To do a reserach fellowship (sorry I don't know details of this).

What this means is that you are extending your education from 4 years to 5 years. You will graduate in 5 years, not 4--but the last two years of your education (after you have successfully completed an OPP or Research fellowship) would have tuition waived.

I am not sure how we went from talking about OPP fellowships to AOA internships--but I hope this sets everything straight.

do you have to pay for the "off" year? Im guessing not and you only pay for year 1 and 2, but i had to ask.

correct..u dont pay for the year off..except for housing/food other non-tuition crap

is it possible to become a state resident and land in-state tuition after a year or so?

Unfortunately, not in the lovely state of Florida. You must be settled here at least one year before classes begin.

An interesting thing about NSU... whenever DO specialists come up as residents/staff doctors in specialties that most people didn't think DO's could land ... they're usually NSU grads for some reason. Or PCOM grads.

Anybody else notice that?

I noticed it when looking for a DO to shadow. I came across 3 ortho and a thoracic surgeon, neonatologists etc. all from NSU!👍

Can anybody tell me where you mailed the thank you notes for your interviewers??? I'm assuming the terry building admissions office...but i cant find their address on the nova website...plz help! i wanna mail these out today!

You'll find out and learn about it during the interview. It doesn't have to be specifically research based on OMM. The OMM fellows are very helpful. NSU has a growing research department, so if can find a mentor to oversee your project and you have it well planned out, I don't see why not.

Since the Nova thread has been bumped, I thought Id throw it out there that Nova is closed for Yom Kippur. I tried calling and got that message.

Does anyone know where Nova stands in accordance to National rankings???

Oh DrKuba...I see you on here starting new threads and asking a whole lot of questions, but are those secondaries getting done? 😛

haha, im not asking as many questions as im answering these days. And yes, all my osteo secondaries that I wanted to get done are done. I am holding off on COMP and LECOM untill I hear from Nova. I have 2 more MD secondaries - albany and RFU - to finish.

Okay good. I told you I'd be on your back about them 🙂

does anyone have any idea?
I'm by no means an expert, but I do not think NSU ranks in the top 50 in either research or primary care. This does not mean that NSU is any worse than another school. It is what you make of your education and experience. Take it with a grain of salt. Best of luck.

P.S. Some of your questions are answered in forums. Try using the handy-dandy SDN search function. 🙂
