Hey

So I have been wrestling with this for quite a while. I have been accepted to MSUCOM as a canadian student, so my tuition is approximately 60000 a year. I would be living at home so would save me those costs. Nova on the other hand is 47-48000 for the year, without factoring living expenses though. What do you guys think ?

I chose MSUCOM because of all their research opportunities. I also like being part of a big public university and I love their campus. If you are super big on research, then I would say you should consider MSUCOM but otherwise I think you can get similar clinical opportunities at NOVA for a cheaper tuition.

I would vote MSU. Being a part of such a huge university system would be fantastic.

You can't attend Nova and live for 12-13k a year. MSU will end up being cheaper no doubt. Both solid schools, go where you feel most comfortable. Either will give you the opportunity to achieve your goals.
Also, don't underestimate the significance of having a support system around for your schooling years, as it sounds like you would at MSU. Medicine is a career, the less sacrifice to your family, the better 🙂

Well where do you want to live for four years? Fort Lauderdale is pretty nice 😉

I could never go back to living with my parents. Have you ever lived independently? If you see living at home with your family as a non-issue then that is fine, but if you have any inclination of not having your own privacy, or quiet study space..etc move out!

The cost difference won't be much, and it would mean you get to experience a whole knew climate, city, and lifestyle (Florida, is the opposite of michigan/ontario). Keep in mind you may be moving around for rotations in 3/4th year anyways.

Tough choice!

Seriously. I'm living back home with my parents for a couple months after living independently. Mom might as well work for the FBI. Everything I do gets investigated. It's like I'm 13 all over again:depressed:😳

I am currently living on my own lol. I know, living with my parents again would be tough. My girlfriend of 5 years lives nearby though so that is a bonus. However, this is more complicated by the fact that she is looking to apply to Nova for marine biology a year from now, so there is a chance that we would live together in Ft Lauderdale after first year of preclerkship.

I know that MSUCOM is very prestigeous especially in the primary care field, and NOVA would probably end up being equal cost wise after accounting for tuition/living/food/car.

I'm assuming you'd be at the Detroit location for MSU? Living at home means the costs are probably about equal.

On paper, MSU is more highly-regarded and no question has better opportunities for research. Personally, even as a MI resident I chose not to apply because I just can't do another 4 years here. I would say the bottom line is this: Are you happy living at home for another 4 years? Is research important to the specialty you want (e.g. surgery)? If the answer is yes to both, maybe choose MSU. Otherwise, you really can't go wrong either way. I will be attending NSU this year and couldn't be more psyched up about it.

Based on that, then go with Nova. Then you could move in together etc, if that's in the cards. I am very biased, I could NEVER ever ever ever ever live with my parents again, and until you do it, i wouldn't risk an acceptance at another equally great school in a different area - where your gf will also be attending -for supposed research opportunities.

I'm sure Nova will have research opportunities too, it is a top notch school.

Yeah, I haven't gotten an acceptance there yet, going for an interview there soon. It is just that MSUCOM starts so early (mid June) that things will be moving quickly from that end

Congrats on your acceptances! I know it's a bit more difficult for Canadian students since space is even more limited, so well done.

Like others have said, the actual "cost of attendance" for Nova will be a lot more than the tuition (20-30k more), so the amount of debt is going to be about the same either way.

I'd probably choose MSUCOM. Although, they do really like for their doctors to stay in Michigan, so keep that in mind. Then again, Nova would be a new awesome adventure for you. Either way, I'm sure you'll be just fine!

Well they can't really force me to stay in Michigan.... can they ? 😛
